5Where In Time is Carmen = an AWESOME gameAug 12, 2004

There's no comparison. This is by FAR the best Carmen Sandiego game there is. It is much, much different from the others (not that the others were bad; I liked them very much) in that you need to know very little about history in order to complete the game. In the others, you need to know your USA or world facts in order to catch the criminals. But in Where In Time, you use abstract thinking, just like a game in the adventure genre, but way easier. While you are figuring out each puzzle for each mission, you can't help but learn some valuable history lessons.
It is also so cool that you get to "meet" historical characters such as Ceasar, Beethoven, Yuri Gagarin, Mansa Musa, Hatshepsut, Edison, Jefferson, Franklin, Leif Erikson, and many, many more. Do YOU know who Murasaki Shikibu is?
(PS- She wrote the world's first novel, The Tale Of Genji)

5Great game!Aug 25, 2009

This is a great game! It's a fun way to learn history and the jokes are great whether you're a parent or a kid. We owned this game a long time ago and had lost it, and bought this copy because we'd liked it. It's even better and funnier than we'd remembered it!

5Great GameJul 06, 2010

This is a great, educational game that I played as a child and recently repurchased. It's starting to show its age in the graphics department, but that does not by any means diminish its fun and playability. It's also a really nostalgic game to play if you remember the television series of the same name. A lot of the characters from that series, including the chief, are in the game.

There are about eighteen levels set in different time periods and places, including ancient Egypt, Kublai Khan's China, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Russia in the space race years. In each level, you meet and interact with famous historical figures who have been kept from doing something pivotal in history by one of Carmen Sandiego's VILE agents. You play an ACME agent sent back in time to capture these criminals and must piece together clues Carmen left behind to find out where they are hiding (the clues always have some historical significance).

It is surprising how much this game taught me about history when I was a kid, and how much it stayed with me. I am a lot more knowledgeable about history now than I would have been had I never played this game. It teaches you a lot of great things about history while still being enjoyable.

1What in the world happened to the real Carmen San Diego games?Jan 18, 2011

I used to play this game in the early 90s, and had fond memories of it. I now have a daughter and tried to introduce it to her. The game is now totally different. The progress through the cases is not based on knowledge anymore but on guesses. It was not interesting to my daughter, and she gave up after about 5 minutes. I stuck to it a little longer to see if it got more interesting with more difficult cases, but eventually gave up as well. This new version is boring at best. It seems it is a dumbed down version of the original.

I tried to identify what had happened to the original games. The truth came out on Wikipedia. The company that produced the original series of game, all multiple prize winners, sold the games to another company, who rewrote what they are today and did not bother to change the names. That is pathetic marketing!!!!

Another major issue with the program is that it does not install easily. Out of 4 computers, all updated XPs, only one took it cleanly, the oldest and slowest one that I don't really use anymore. After some work, I got it installed on another one, but it crashed regularly. After investigating the issue, it looked like other people had the same problem. You would tend to think that the bugs of a 20 year old program would have been worked out by now.

I ended up returning the product.
