5Excellent Product!Dec 23, 2010
By Richard
First, I'm an advanced user. 2-Home networks running independently that include 5-laptops, 1-desktop (Vista), and 1-MS Server 2003. The reviews on Amazon initially made me hesitate about this product; although, the 2011 version rates very highly in PCMag and PCWorld testing. After receipt and installation of this Security Suite, I'm not sure what all the hub-bub is all about? I have everything from XP SP-3 to Vista Professional (not on 7 yet) with two different Office Suites (2003 & 2007) and a plethora of applications on each machine - I EXPERIENCED ABSOLUTELY ZERO ISSUES WITH THIS PRODUCT. I also utilize several industry specific apps for insurance (AMS360 for example) that tend to be very finicky about security software and generally don't react well to firewalls, shields, etc. Again, I had NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER with this product. Over the years, I've used McAfee, Norton, Panda, AVG, Ad-Aware, AVAST, Kaspersky, and ESET (consumer and corporate versions) and Webroot has really done a nice job with this security suite. Installation was clean, scanned each system witout issue, no false-positives as of yet, and no blocked apps. I hope this review helps disspell some of the dark cloud that seems to be hanging over this product on Amazon. I have no doubt folks experienced problems, but likely, there were problems (possibly hidden) with those systems prior to the installation of this product, so FEAR NOT and purchase with confidence.

5Simple to use and powerful PC protection.Dec 12, 2010
By trashcanman
I've had some epic battles with malware in the past few years. After my last PC crashed and burned horrifically, I've been especially vigilant in trying to keep my new computer fresh and clean. Every slowdown was like a thorn in my eye. Every program crash a reason to panic. I've downloaded numerous free anti-malware programs and still the battle continued. Scans on top of scans, updates, and constant research following an infection from the dreaded Win 7 Antivirus virus, which embeds itself into your computer and harasses you with fake scans that insist if you don't buy their fictitious antivirus program, a crash is imminent. The virus is notoriously stubborn and actively stops you from downloading or launching legit antivirus programs. This is to say that my free programs were not getting it done. Amazon Vine to the rescue!

Webroot Antivirus offers comprehensive protection that beats anything I've gotten off of the web. Following a battery of scans from freeware including Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes that turned up nothing, I launched Webroot for the first time after an extremely fast and simple installation that did not even require a system restart. My first scan took a very long time, but it rooted out DOZENS of previously undetected cookie trackers and other spyware and adware in addition to some very nasty-looking viruses including a trojan or two (which allow remote hackers access to your systems and information). Score one for the premium stuff. In spite of my cheapskatish love of freeware, I am always very leery of programs like Spyware Doctor that offer their scans for free but charge for removal. How simple to create a few false results and scare up some extra business, no? I am also extremely sick of the unreliable and pushy Norton Antivirus and it's nonstop pop-ups begging for renewal. But with bought-and-paid-for hotness like Webroot, I can be assured that no fast ones are being pulled. My research seems to indicate that this program is among the best and most accessible options for PC protection and I have had no reason to argue otherwise.

Note to other freeware addicts: make sure you turn off the active protection on your other programs if you do not uninstall them altogether. For a while after installing Webroot, my PC was freezing up a bit and causing me some sweat. But my constant scans during this time showed me that Webroot persistently detects threats better than scans from free programs and subsequent examination of the real-time protection systems proved that the layers of this program far exceed the limited protection of the others. In short: you get what you pay for. After shutting down my other programs, my PC began to run like a dream so keep this in mind when you install a new antivirus on your computer. Some interesting features include the usual customizable auto-scan schedules and auto-quarantining of infected programs complete with threat-level ratings. Most originally, there is a "gamer mode" which will hold any scheduled updates or scans while you play to avoid interfering with the quality of your gaming session. Nice.

I've spent the better part of a month with Webroot and so far, so good. Once I cleared the freeware out of the way, my PC ran very smoothly and many an interloping program has met it's end at the hands of my new online bodyguard. Going online with no protection is about as smart as a bareback back-alley gangbang these days and I've got to say I feel more secure about surfing it up with Webroot at my back than I have in years. Highly recommended.

1STOP NOW and ReconsiderSep 20, 2010
By Alan S
OH MY GOSH what a big mistake we made installing this product. Since we already had a webroot subscription, we were entitled to free updates. So we downloaded to our XP-SP3 computer version 7.0.4.102 of Webroot Antivirus with Spy Sweeper (2011 edition). Once installed, the product says it must perform an initial full scan, so we let it. But here is where things went wrong really fast. The software immediately hijacked the PC's performance and we could not do anything else. Internet Explorer would not open at all and it took literally 6 minutes just to open My Computer. Forget about checking your email. Even if we paused the scan, performance was very, very poor and literally took 6-8 minutes for anything to open. I couldn't help but reminisce of the early MSDOS days (before windows) when downloading large files with a 2400 baud modem took hours.

It's scan of the hard drive was also painful with each and every file taking several seconds. We estimated it took about one hour to scan only 1000 files. We started the scan at 8PM on 9/15/10 and by 1PM on 9/17/10, the scan still was NOT done. After 23 hours 59 minutes and 59 seconds, the elapsed time counter resets to zero. We killed the scan after 203,979 files were scanned (it never found anything). (It's funny because after this software was removed, we discovered only approx 98,500 files exist on the PC).

I clicked the help button on the software and it was supposed to connect me to Webroot's customer service but since IE7 would not open, that option became useless. I then called Webroot's 866 help line but the recording informed me that because of the 'popularity' of their new release, the wait time was over 1.5 hours. I hung on for another 10 minutes and then was promptly disconnected by their automated system.

It took another 40 minutes to uninstall the product since performance was still affected. However, once the software was completely removed, our perfomance returned and all seems back to normal, well except for the Webroot subscription we paid for until 5/2011 but no longer have their software installed.

Do not work with windows 7 64 bit. After having it a year i noticed there was a fifty dollar charge on my bank account. Webroot now retains your bank info and automatically charges you another subscription every year without your permission. I never signed up for it and they charged me for it. The cust service reps do not answer there phones, now i have to contact my CC company. What a pain for something i do not even have on my computer anymore. Stay away. Microsoft Security essentials works better and is free.

5Very goodFeb 16, 2011

Note: I am not a computer systems analyst or anything like that. As a regular user of computers I give you my perspective on this program.

I have used AVG, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky and now Webroot. I have to say that the main problem I had with Norton has not happened with Webroot. Same thing with Kaspersky. It seemed to me that Norton gave fits to my system. McAfee had many tech support issues, which I have not had to access with Webroot, so I cannot really compare that fairly. But it's also noteworthy that I was able to install Webroot without tech support. I couldn't say that about McAfee. So maybe that's a huge plus for this program.

Although the program ad says it runs faster, in my opinion it seems to run more slowly than other programs I've used. That doesn't bother me with this one because it doesn't seem to affect computer performance when it's running. It doesn't seem to crash or hang up. It also doesn't seem to be fully 'awake' when I am on my desktop, which concerns me (yes I have it in real time mode). So far I have not had anything get through the system that I'm aware of, so I have not had to use trojan removal functions, etc... So from my prespective this program runs more smoothly than Norton, McAfee and Kaspersky. I think it's smoother than AVG too. After 14 minutes it had scanned 569,000 items on my laptop. After 21 minutes it had scanned 638,000 items, so the scan does seem to slow as it progresses. I have no idea why that happens, but that's what it's doing.

On user interface it seems rather simple with not many options. This is good and bad. For example, it shows what it's scanning, but doesn't show you a percentage complete or any kind of progress comparison bar or graph. So, if you don't know how many items are on your laptop (who wants to remember that?) then you have no idea how far into the scan it has gone. It also doesn't seem to have an option for scanning the most critical areas (a feature in Kaspersky I particularly like).

It also has an auto gamer off mode, which tells the product not to conflict with game software when playing. That's a great feature because Kaspersky regularly flags game software activity as suspicious. So on that point this product beats Kaspersky.

BTW-I ran my tests on the least expensive eMachine laptop one could buy at Walmart. It has Windows 7 home and the machine generally runs without any problems. So on a laptop that is cheaper than most smartphones this product works great. I'd say that's a sign of a decent piece of software, at least from my amateur perspective.

Overall the product seems to deliver what it promises more smoothly than the competition. I highly recommend this product.

Update-April 2011-I still feel this way about this product and am using it without any difficulties.

Second update:-December 2011-using this product with further automatic updates and enhanced options. Smooth as it gets so far.
