Description:

The Bokkens are made with slightly longer handles to accommodate your training equipment. Here, the O Tanto trainer is shown being griped in a Hockey Glove. Hundreds of years ago, the Japanese discovered a simple truth; that to become a good swordsman you'll have to practice, a great deal. To become a great swordsman you'll have to practice with a "live blade". And during the period between "good" and "great", you should spend your time building your skills and confidence enough to wield a razor sharp Katana safely and effectively. To accomplish this, the Japanese relied on a simple wooden sword called a "bokken" for much of their training. It was made from the super tough wood of the Japanese White Oak, a wood they called Kashi. The swords produced from this wood had the advantage of replicating the size, weight and feel of a steel sword, while minimizing the possibility of causing grievous or permanent injury to those who used it. Authentic Kashi wood Bokkens are still used today, but are becoming quite costly. They also have the disadvantages, being made of wood, that they may rot, crack split or splinter. Cold Steel's solution to these dilemmas was to design a synthetic substitute, low in price and impervious to the elements. Our Bokken is made of the heaviest grade polypropylene available. While they're not quite as rigid as wood, they have the advantages of being virtually unbreakable and remarkably stiff and cut resistant.

5My BokkenJun 20, 2009

What can I say about it except that it is a nice product. I like the bokken. It is not a toy and could hurt someone if used as a weapon for defense, which I am planning on doing and to practice using a Wakazashi sword. Cold Steel sells quality products such as this piece. I might even buy the longer one. If you want a quality bokken or boken, then get one of these bad boys. Go to their website and watch the videos..Cheers.

I just wanted to add that I had the guard missing for this sword but they sent me a replacement for it..I even bought another one..Cheers

5its very strongSep 04, 2008

this boken is stronger compared 2 other bokens such as wood . if u make contact w/ a wooden boken from this polypropylene material. the wooden boken will shake or vibrate from the force throughout the boken, while the polypropylene material is stiff and hard knowing that it is basically industructable.

5I will never buy a wooden bokken again.Feb 20, 2010

I have every Cold Steel polypropylene training blade. Some friends and I started an unofficial "chambara" club at my high school. One time, we tried using a wood bokken and it was shattered in half by the polypropylene wakazashi in it's first use (it's sad, truly). These training weapons are virtually indestructible; we have TRIED to break them, and the closest we got to breaking one is by setting it on a hand rail with two people sitting on each end of it. I don't need to convince you to buy this, but unless you plan on practicing on AIR, then you're best bet would be Cold Steel's stuff.

5Polypropylene=good. Wood=not as good.Oct 31, 2011

The Martial Arts require practice and that demands dependable tools that last long enough which in training is a lifetime. I own the Katana, Wakazashi, and Tanto Bokkens by Cold Steel. I have purchased all three because the wooden Bokken I bought before has a hairline crack about ten inches long starting at the tip and I consider it unworthy for training purposes. I am sure these by Cold Steel, the only supplier of these products that I have found, will out last me and my descendants as long as none of us uses them as a fire poker.

5Best training tools for the moneySep 24, 2011

Cold Steel's plastic bokken are awesome, plain and simple. They take a severe beating, they're inexpensive, and they are impervious to dirt, oil, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Granted, they are not indestructible, but unless you throw it in a fire or take a hacksaw to it, it should last you for the rest of your life.

My biggest complaint is that these are not made from high density plastic. In other words, they are much lighter than wooden bokken or metal training swords. This may not be a concern for some people, but I always prefer to train with stuff that is similar in weight to what I would use in actual cutting practice.

Regardless, they are indispensable training tools and would also be handy in a real fight. Get a pair in each size (katana, wakizashi, and tanto) and a good training partner and you're good to go for the rest of your life.
