3works well, but poor interfaceApr 27, 2008
By GameMaker
I've used windvd for a lot of years, mainly because it is well-behaved and seems to play the wide variety of media that I want to play without complaint. This version is no different. I'm using this both on win xp and vista and have had no problems on either platform.

One thing that I really dislike about this version however are the controls. Everyone is familiar with vcr-style controls. Play, pause, stop, fast forward, fast reverse, and skip to next/prev chapter. So why dork with that? *boggle* But no, Coral decided that it would somehow improve the interface to remove the fast forward/fast reverse buttons and combine that functionality with the chapter forward and back. The net result is that it is a lot harder to use, and much less intuitive.

3COMMERCIAL VERSUS FREEWARE DVD PLAYERJun 02, 2008
By Edwin Mccullough
The two commercial survivors WinDvd and PowerDvd have parlayed all the free distributions into a large market share and their costs have become astronomical and their software so complex it locks up... Might I suggest a freeware HIGH DEFINITION alternative, the VLC DVDPlayer as well as another no cost player the AVS DVD player... The VLC DVDPlayer can play MKV extensions and a ton of other formats. To test it, I watched a Spiderman I HD disc rip (.mkv) on my computer and it was beautiful....You don't always have to pay for hyped inferior software

1A Step Back From Earlier VersionsJan 11, 2009
By Princess Nikki
Corel WinDVD 9 is a step back from earlier versions - actually, it's pretty bad on its own.

I have no idea why they decided to mess up the controls, even hitting Play (with the Space bar) can be an adventure. Sometimes when you hit Pause the frame will run and you'll have to wait a few seconds until Pause takes effect. Same with Fast Forward and Rewind, you can't properly do either without the frames running longer/shorter than you want them to.

The Screen Capture function is seriously hindered by the Pause/FF/Rewind control mess. You will need to try several times before landing the frame you want and more than often, you'll have to settle for the frame you CAN get, not the one you actually want/need.

Unlike with earlier versions, all your captures will save instantly whether you save them or not. There's no "Save" button, once you hit the screencap button it's saved to folder and you can't choose the format. It's automatic (huge) BMP.

The only function that's improved is the QuickClip one, but that's not enough to make this WinDVD 9 version any less trash.

The picture quality is crisp and clean, but so were other versions.

If you don't need the HD/Blu-ray function, WinDVD 7 is *still* the best version out there. Pity InterVideo is no longer around to keep making great video software.

Crashes immediately when All2HD (upsampling) is enabled. Unable to play DVDs until WinDVD is reinstalled.

4Great DVD Software, Once Installed! Recommended!Dec 12, 2008
By C. F. Hill "CFH"
"WinDVD 9" really is a fantastic, feature rich DVD and video playback software package, once you get it installed on a good computer. Here are my observations:

First the good -
* Picture clarity is simply amazing! The "upscaling" on standard DVDs shocked me at how much better the picture looked

* Fantastic features for laptop users, like "TimeStretch", allow for optimal performance

* Using the controls are easy with the intuitive user interface

Now the bad -
* Software will install on a system that does not meet the minimum requirements (costing a "*" on my rating). This cost me a good bit of time trying to figure out why a DVD would not play back on my two year old laptop (got an "Overlay" error).

* Software will report errors from other programs while installing if the wrong versions are not present. This was explained in a package insert and did not impact the actual installation.

Once the software was installed on my new laptop, I was more than pleased with this package and am quite impressed with the performance. Recommended for newer PCs.
