No support - install it twice and it's finished (but new fixed)Jul 21, 2011
Update: I was finally able to get through to a tech support person. Persistence pays.
Tech support was very helpful and cured the problem. I use this product to develop asp and php websites. Expression Web plays nice with Xamp and Apache so that you can run WordPress and other popular server based software.
I'm pushing the rating review up to four stars. It would have gotten five but Microsoft, in their overly proprietary zealous posture, failed to allow for hard and motherboard upgrades. Other software companies provide methods of upgrading hardware without having to beg tech support for help. Perhaps by now Microsoft has fixed this bug?
No wonder some people hate Microsoft. . .Expression Web 4 can be installed only twice.
If you have to upgrade a hard disk drive or replace a laptop - you can forget about Expression Web.
I've used Front Page, Expression Web 2 and Expression Web 4
Expression Web 4 works pretty good but requires training - web site development has gotten too complex to expect simple intuitive software. So, even if you smarten up and learn css and run Windows with Xampp and php, Expression Web 4 will eventually fail you when you need to upgrade your hardware.
What happens is this: You install a new hard drive and re-install your software applications.
The Expression Web 4 installation will require activation, which it does and it will report that the product is already activated. Next, you need to enter your "Product Activation" key - and when you do, EW4 will report that the Product Activation number is invalid.
Even if you clone your hard drive using something like Acronis, you will have this problem.
The solution? Pay $100 with your credit card to report this problem to the Microsoft "support" website and hope that someone will call you back.
This is a well known and frequently documented problem with Microsoft's Expression Web 4
Be forewarned, you can install this product only twice and then it's finished.

Did not work out of the box, no support from MicrosoftAug 07, 2011
Installing on Windows 7 64 bit, the product crashes when started.
Calling Microsoft, they say they will be happy to help me, if I only pay them $290 for the one support call, since it is a "professional" product they do not provide the regular support as they do for home products.
I sent the product back and I will think very hard before spending any more money on Microsoft products, if they refuse to provide any support. (Not the first time, but now I will remember).

bugs bugs bugsNov 25, 2010
Moved from original EW to EW4 because of worsening unresolvable bugs. EW4 fixed those bugs but now has product activation issues (asks for activation key EVERY time progam starts). Even worse, product refuses to accept activation key on first attempt. I work around that by putting key in clipboard and repeatedly pasting it to activation routine until program thanks me for buying product--but on trying to start program after exiting that particular session, EW4 once again challenges me to provide activation key. MS tech support is useless, refuses to talk about issue unless I give credit card number--I don't think so, scooter. When EW4 works, it's peachy, and I'm optimistic bug situation will improve with revs, but I've had a bellyfull of dealing with Microsoft and I'm seriously considering other platforms.

Best Known HTML/CSS EditorJul 01, 2011
By Larry Gowdy
I have been using various HTML editors for over ten years, and in my opinion Expression is the very best by a wide margin. I love it!
A few of the most important advantages:
Speed - as fast as Word (some HTML editors are oddly slow loading and saving files, and have an overall sluggishness).
Spell Checker - as good as Word (some HTML editors have no spell checker, while other editors' spell check is slow and/or not so accurate).
Cursor Movement - as good as Word (many HTML editors have agonizingly slow cursor behavior).
Word Wrap - as good as Word (some HTML editors have very poor or no word wrap).
Appearances - modern dark theme that is a huge improvement over most all other known HTML editors (no more 80s/90s style!).
Stability - pretty good although I have noticed a few minor glitches when the program is used non-stop for over eight hours (it fails to check the schema compatibility correctly, but exiting and restarting the program solves the problem).
Layout - the normal menus and icons are in a similar and/or logical location as other Office products (some editors rearrange their menus, which requires the user to relearn the layout).
W3C validation - the built-in validation for HTML and CSS has so far always been correct, and further verification through W3C is just a few clicks away (no other known editor is as well equipped to validate HTML and CSS).
Cost - the upgrade cost is less expensive than almost all other paid HTML editors (I know of no reason to even consider paying for any HTML editor other than Expression).
Limited themes - the only thing that I would like to see added to Expression is the ability to change the theme color, perhaps with a slide control like within the MS Media Player or Serif's DrawPlus. At present I am more than satisfied with Expression's options, but in the future I might want to change the appearances, and I would like to have the option available.
For those of us who use normal productivity software like MS Office, Expression feels like you are still using Word but with numerous added features. Quite excellent!
The Script Editor in Office 2003 was also very good but it did not have the spell checker nor the dark modern theme. The MS Visual Studio Express 2008 and 2010 editors are also pretty good, but still their themes are not as modern, and their over all speed is noticeably slower than Expression's. To my knowledge, Expression Web 4 Pro wins over all other HTML editors in every measure.
I cannot comment much on the visual editor since I type HTML/CSS and do not rely the visual editor (visual editors seem to be so slow and cumbersome to me). Nevertheless, I have tinkered a little with the visual editor in Expression, and I was happily surprised to discover that the HTML/CSS code created by Expression was correct. In years past it was common for all visual editors to create buggy code, and so I am a bit impressed that there has been noticeable progress.
Would I recommend Expression Web 4 Pro? You bet! After using the program for over a month, I still wake in the mornings anxious to get to work with Expression; that is how much I truly enjoy Expression.

Total failure of software - no access to manufacturerNov 29, 2010
By M. Jorgensen
Expression Web Fails to run.
I have sent the message below to the Manufacturer. There is no place to report malfunctioning software without paying them. The told me the Expression web forum is the only place to report program failures. I've made two reports there. No one has responded. The failure of this program really hurts my business, and there is no way to report this to the manufacturer.
Expression Web 4 stops running and runs too slow to be usable. My computer runs all other programs well including Expression Web 3. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the .Net Framework. This program is defective and I need to know if it is going to be a supported product, and where I can report it as defective.
