5It blocked attempts to get my financial info!Nov 02, 2010
By Diane Kistner
I uninstalled my expiring Kaspersky and installed Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security. The process took practically all day because there was so much that needed to be cleaned up, but after the installation was complete and my first full scan and system tuneup was done, WOW, my computer is a lot faster now! I'm having far less problems during and after booting up, too, because I set Trend Micro to delay loading startup programs until after the OS finishes booting.

I was sent the 1-PC version to review instead of the 3-PC version I thought I was getting. I was disappointed about this, because our household is wirelessly networked and I wanted to have a chance to see how our network as a whole behaved with the Trend Micro product protecting all of our computers. Too bad I can't address the product's performance at that level. I did have a brief snafu with our local network not being automatically recognized, but a quick and pleasant exchange with customer support via chat cleared that up quickly. (I just closed Trend Micro, connected manually to the network, then opened Trend Micro again. After that, it automatically recognized the other computers.) The real bummer is that I can't avail myself of the free 10GB online storage because the folder I need to have backed up is physically located on another computer on the network and that computer is not under license.

Now, I like the look of Kaspersky better, design-wise. Trend Micro's design is in-your-face macho; it reminds me too much of the familiar (to women) adage: "Avoid men driving red trucks like the plague." One photo in the installation sequence, that of a woman and child having fun on the computer in the foreground with the "strong silent type" male in the background purportedly protecting them from malicious intent smacked of sexism. But the program itself seems to be doing what it says it will do, and it's fast. I was always aware of Kaspersky doing its thing, but I hardly notice the Trend Micro Titanium. So unless something happens to demonstrate to me that this is all just an illusion that I am protected, I'm feeling good about the product.

One thing that really impressed me was that, when I turned on Data Theft Protection, about six hours later I got a message that my credit card information had been blocked from going out. I don't have any autopayments set up with anybody, and I wasn't doing anything requiring a credit card, so I was surprised that there was an attempt to get my credit card number. It's easy to set up this protection, and you control what you protect. I was protecting my email address, but it blocks some of my log-ins, so I turned that particular block off. I also enabled the Trend Micro Vault, which allows for remotely locking the files on your computer if it is stolen. This will be an important feature for travelers with laptops.

UPDATE: I am horrified (and happy now that I have Titanium Maximum Security) to see how often there are assaults on my computer trying to get my bank account info. The data theft protection reports blocking at least three attempts daily to get my account info. I am breathing easier, but also uneasy wondering how long this has been going on. This started happening after I entered one of the Big Prize contests on Facebook! Gadzooks! Facebook users beware!

FEEDBACK FOR TREND MICRO: I love the data theft protection feature, but I don't love the way there does not seem to be any way to turn the pop-up notifications off for it. (Turning off other notifications doesn't turn these off; somebody comment here if you've found a way.) If what I am working in is not that important, just clicking back into the window I want to focus on minimizes the notification from Titanium. However, some of the graphics programs I work in lose whatever was in their minds when a notification pops up, and I have to re-enter the information. Because these are often tricky settings, it's really frustrating. But I don't want to turn off the data theft protection because of the frequent assaults on my system. Please fix this in an update, Trend Micro!

3No pop ups or update reminders.Dec 01, 2010
By Sam Archer
Overall: Easy to use and doesn't need to constantly update like Norton or Mcafee, but may not have as good protection against older viruses.

Pros:

Easy to install.
Takes about 10 minutes and you only need to enter an email address and your product key.

Won't slow down your computer. Recent test on Tom's Hardware showed this software doesn't slow down computer for web browsing, games or productivity software. In my experience, the computer runs fast and it loads faster than McAfee.

NO updates. This is "cloud based" so you won't get those annoying update reminders. However, I've heard that this approach is not so good at catching older viruses and malware.

Cons:

Doesn't have it's own firewall program. Has a firewall "booster" that just uses Windows Firewall instead.
Windows firewall works fine, but you would expect the program to have it's own firewall program.

Lack of configuration options. You really don't have much choice at all on the options screen. Just when to run a scan and turn it on and off.

1BEWARE OF TREND MICRO PRODUCTSJan 08, 2011
By dawns2005
1-5-2011

Here is how it all began: I had a 1-year subscription to the "Trend Micro PC-cillin" internet security program. It was time to renew my subscription. I looked on the Trend Micro website and found an upgraded version called "Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security." The price difference was minimal and the upgraded version advertised much more protection. So of course, I purchased the upgraded Titanium program for $55.95. And then the problems began...

The problems began when I was unable to download the new program that I had just purchased on my credit card. I called Trend Micro customer service @ 1-800-864-6027 and spoke with David. David informed me that I had to uninstall my old Trend Micro program before I would be able to successfully install the upgraded Titanium program. David said he would send me two e-mails: The first e-mail included the steps to uninstall the old program. The second e-mail had the steps to install the new program. We said good-bye and I then followed the steps in the first e-mail to uninstall the old program. To my disbelief, as soon as the steps were finished to uninstall the old program, my internet connection completely stopped working. I could no longer access the internet; therefore, I could not access the second e-mail with the steps to install the new program. I called Trend Micro customer service again and spoke with Jed. Jed asked me to follow his verbal instructions to fix the problem, which I did, but when nothing worked Jed became rude and told me that I had to call my internet service provider because at this point the problem was no longer associated with Trend Micro. I calmly explained that I did not have a problem with my internet connection until the very second that I followed the steps in the e-mail to uninstall my old Trend Micro program. Jed would not acknowledge the obvious connection to the problem and continued to tell me to call my internet service provider because Trend Micro could not help me install the new program until my internet connection was working again.

I thought OK, he knows more than I do. I then called my internet service provider who also ran me through over an hour's worth of unsuccessful instructions over the phone. My internet service provider then advised me that I would have to call Dell, the maker of my computer, to fix the problem.

OK, OK. I'm thinking that it is getting late and I really need my computer fixed. So, I then called Dell's Technical Support. I was on the phone with a Dell representative for over three hours. Right away, my Dell rep knew exactly what the problem was! Dell informed me that my problem is that when Trend Micro's program subscriptions expire they put out a firewall which corrupts the computers drivers. I was then informed that it would cost me $139.32 to fix the problem. Lucky me... Three hours later, Dell was finished uninstalling the old Trend Micro program, fixed my drivers, removed a virus that Trend Micro's uninstallation caused, successfully downloaded the Trend Micro Titanium security program that I had already purchased at the beginning of all of this for $55.95, and had my internet up and running again. After a lot of Thank You's to Dell...

My next phone call was back to the Trend Micro customer service to inform them of the hell on earth that I had just experienced for the past 6 HOURS. I explained the blow-by-blow inconveniences that the Trend Micro programs had caused me. I emphasized how the security program that I purchased to protect my computer had not only failed but actually shut down my internet and caused a virus. I explained that not only did I have to invest another $139.32 into my computer to have the problems that Trend Micro caused fixed but will also be experiencing the joy of a huge cell phone bill after spending 6 HOURS on the phone. I firmly, but politely (which took a lot of strength at this point) asked for a refund. Here comes the best part...

The Trend Micro representative informed me that I should have called Trend Micro if I was experiencing a virus on my computer and that if a $55.95 refund is granted the program I had just spent over $200 on would be deactivated immediately from my computer. I laughed out of sheer frustration. I explained that I absolutely did not want anything deactivated in complete fear that the computer I just spent so much to fix would crash yet again. I also advised this representative that it is absurd that I was expected to hang up the phone with Dell (who I had paid to fix my problems) after Dell tells me I have a virus and then call Trend Micro back who was completely unhelpful and rude during the first two phone calls I had placed to them initially. My first reaction when I hear I have a virus " please oh please fix it immediately"... Not," oh wait, I should call the already unhelpful company who started this whole mess and refused to take responsibility for it!" Like I said, absurd.

For another 45 minutes, I was on the phone with Trend Micro rep who continued to put me on hold and repeated the same sorry story line. The end of this story is that Trend Micro's best offer was a 1-month extension on my 1-year subscription. 1 month = $4.66. And the best part: My Trend Micro account does not reflex that a one-month extension was granted! Like I said, laughable.

Please beware of this company. I have never had so many problems occur with no responsibility taken by the company who caused them. If you dare to try it for yourself and you run into trouble with their programs, good luck to you. My advice: AVOID TREND MICRO PROGRAMS AT ALL COSTS. There are plenty of other security providers out there to choice from...

(P.S. I won't even get into the problems this caused with my printer software... lets just say it took another phone call to Dell to reinstall)

I've been running trend micro since 2008 haven't had any problems with my computers. Just a note before you download the program make sure to erase your old internet security progam even if its trend micro that way you won't have any problems. This was the first time i've downloaded it off the internet always got the disk before. If they keep offering it this way that's how im going to get it.

3I want to love it, but it's just 'OK' to me...Dec 18, 2010
By Andrea L. Polk "Savvy Sleuth"
I received this through the Amazon Vine program, which provides me products to review based upon previous purchases. Many of these purchases have been anti-virus and other software programs which I've installed on my PC's (I don't own a MAC darn it...) which run various operating systems including XP, Vista 64-bit, and Windows 7. I installed TRend Micro Titanium Maximum Security on my HP desktop, running Vista 64-bit. It is a relatively new machine which met the basic requirements for installation of this product.

My Experience with Installation:
Per the recommendation of another reviewer I uninstalled Malwarebytes (a free program on my machine to check for malware) and the older version of Trend Micro 2010 that was my antivirus prior to installing this one. I have also previously used BitDefender, AVG, Viper, Norton, McAfee and others, but Trend Micro products are always at the top of my list due to the ease of installation and overall unobtrusive nature of the software.

Once the two programs were uninstalled I restarted the machine (always a good idea) and placed the Trend Micro Titanium Max Security CD in the drive. The first screen gave me several options, from which I chose 'Install Program'. It then said "Checking Computer" which I'm sure was for other antivirus software - which it did not located because I'd already removed it.

Next it asked me for the serial number; located on the paper sleeve that held the CD. After accepting the serial number (Vine Voices receive a 1-user license, but if you buy this product you get 3 licenses to put this on 3 computers), an agreement pops up. Once you click OK then it begins installing the software on your machine.

From that point on I timed the installation. My computer has an Intel dual-core 2.4Ghz with 4GB and moves quickly through most applications. This install took 21 minutes to complete, and then I was asked to restart my machine to finalize the installation. Overall this seemed a bit slow to me and the software did seem to hang a few times.

Things I Noticed Once Installed:
The interface is very clean and simple, but has all the basics there. Windows Firewall popped up after installation saying it was not on. I simply turned it on and that message never came up again. Later while checking out 'Settings' on the main control panel of Titanium Max, I noted in 'Network' that I could click 'Activate Firewall Booster'. I clicked 'apply' and exited. Later I came back and noted it was unclicked. Not sure what's up with that, but Windows Firewall is active. This program uses cloud technology and doesn't have a built in firewall. I'm crossing my fingers that works well for the long run, but right now I wonder 'Why do I need a booster?' It either works or it doesn't. Time will tell.

This security suite promises protection for Instant Messaging. It covers Windows Live, Yahoo Messenger, AIM (AOL) and Skype, but all these must be clicked in the settings to be working for you. I was disappointed to see no support for Facebook, which I use. Definitely a negative for me.

System start-up programs can be tweaked and you can have the software not start until all programs are up and running (the fastest) or go with one of two others which slow down your start up, but giving you protection immediately. I tried the 'no protection' Extra Performance option first. I found that the software didn't come on at all! Another negative. I immediately changed it back to the middle setting (Balanced) which comes on at start-up, with minimal system usage.

Checking out the 'Toolkit' I had the software gather info and send it to Trend Micro about potential malware. I don't think it found a thing, but decided to do it to see how long a search would take and what, if anything it would find. Other options in addition to locating threats include debug, uninstall and details of what was found. This is probably for more advanced users and won't be needed by most.

The System Tuner and Scan buttons are fairly self-explanitory. Options to run quick scan or full scans are to the right of the Scan button (a little arrow). A quick scan took about 2 minutes, but that speed will be dependent upon how big your hard drive(s) are and how many programs you have on your computer.

At one point the protection suite simply stopped running and shut itself down. I opened the console and restarted it, noting it had stopped 1 spyware threat. I'm not sure what happened, but it disappointed me to find that it had shut itself down at all! Not what this type of software is supposed to do.

Overall Impression:
Time will tell if this security suite is as promised a 'premium security for total online safety'. I have my doubts.

It doesn't slow the machine down much. Norton, BitDefender, and McAfee are worse, AVG is better in that department. It does offer several features like Parental Controls (not offered in all security suites) and 10 GB of backup with the option to pay for more. It promises to speed up and improve your PC performance. This is one I don't completely believe. So far... it hasn't, and a free program called Glary Utilities, is much better at it and quicker too! It does update itself without you having to remember to do it, but isn't that pretty much what an automatic update setting is for anyway?

Would I recommend this to a friend?
I'd recommend AVG Internet Security 3 User - 2 Year Subscription first, if you don't need parental controls. Titanium is OK, and probably best for laptops to utilize all the features such as authenticating wireless hotspots and WiFi networks, but it wouldn't be my first choice for the best antivirus, spyware protection.
