Later they later discover they want to run the cool labs and practices to get really good and ready for the workplace. At this point part of you might wish for SQL Enterprise so you can do everything! But who has $16,000 for that full SQL 2008 R2 enterprise edition?
Think of SQL 2008 R2 Developer as SQL Enterprise for student prices. What a deal!!! On your stand alone machine it does EVERYTHING the $16,000 version does for just $50. It all works in all features so practice away!! Can this be true? Well I read the entire EULA and if you promise not to install in a business production environment then Microsoft is basically giving you the $16,000 version for about $50. Bravo! I recommend this to all my students and readers as the way to go for learning SQL.

Great Product; Difficult InstallMay 09, 2011

SQL Server 2008 is an excellent product but the install can be a bit tricky. A word of advise: Before attempting the install, download and apply all Microsoft updates to other products installed on your PC, especially Visual Studio. I have Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 and the install would not let me continue until I upgraded 2008 to SP2. I also had to upgrade my HP netbook to Windows 7 Home Edition from the Starter Edition, but now it runs great.

It took a while to get this product successfully installed on my PC but some of the issues related to Windows 7 security and permissions and not to the product itself. It is a complex product to install so allow some quality time for this effort.
Once installed, we were able to migrate several of my forms-based applications from SQL-Server 2000 to SQL-Server 2008. We were also able to upsize a new prototype app from Access-2003 to SQL-Server 2008. It worked great right out of the box. The only conversion issue we found was that checkboxes didn't convert correctly. We had to manually update each of these in the tables and also re-add the checkbox data elements to the forms. I am certain there was some option that we failed to select while we were creating the migration procedure.
This is a great developer's tool and cost under $50 so price is certainly not an issue.

I bought this for my training and certification and I have been just impressed. The price is great. Plus I can use it to do my development on and I don't have to use a trial, express edition, or pay for an expensive version. Thank You microsoft and thank you Amazon.
And if you are wondering it will do both x64 and x86. That was my worry but it turns out that it does all of that. If you are looking to purchase this I think you won't be dissapointed at all.

I use this database on my development desktop. When I'm reasdy to move it out to the production server I just do a backup and restore. Has almost everything you need for 99% of my development needs.
