4Sound Forge is still pretty goodSep 29, 2011
By Mr. Fahey "TBW"
I have used Sound Forge 6.0 for years to do sound editing and recording. When I upgraded to Windows 7, I found that I couldn't port my old copy of SF6.0 to the new computer so I had to purchase this version.

It's not too shabby. It will do basically everything 6.0 did. Some of the controls are different or in a different menu, but after a few uses, I've been able to do almost everything I could before.

Word to the wise, one of the best things Sound Forge did in Windows XP was allow you to record sound off of websites. However, Microsoft and the sound card companies whose products are used on a lot of PCs have removed the ability of the computer to do this, it is not a problem with Sound Forge. So you will want to check that your computer's sound card will allow that recording. I didn't and now I have to find work arounds.

Still debating if I need to replace ACID. I think overall, Adobe Soundbooth would work better for me, but it's way too expensive for someone who's a casual user.

I am glad I have this new version of sound forge on my new computer, it responds well on the IBM Thinkpad. Solid product.

5Great audio editing proggyMar 29, 2012
By J. Muir
I've used SF quite a bit in the past and my old SF8 didn't play nicely with Win 7 when I upgraded, so I bought Audio Studio 10.
Installed without a hitch and ported over/referenced all the third party plugs as expected.

I'm using SF10 AS for finalizing/mastering .wavs exported out of Sonar.
All the track/bus automation and plugs are done in the DAW, export to stereo, then do the final audio cleanup and sweetening in SF (normalizing, balancing, limiting, eq, multiband compressing, etc).
Even though I can do all that stuff in Sonar, I just find it easier to do the final audio editing steps in SF once it's dropped to stereo. Always have.

I also use SF10 AS for cleaning up/converting old LPs to mp3s.
I record the lps in Sonar since it's easier to cut & separate into tracks, export the single tracks (songs) then do the audio editing in SF.
The recording can be done in SF, but I'd rather cut up the songs into tracks in the DAW rather than parse them out in SF.
Once the song .wav is in SF, I can quickly cut & trim the beginnings/endings - mouse wheel zoom right down to the "sine wave", and trim/crop at the null point so the song won't start/stop with a pop, save as mp3.

Sometimes a click/pop/scratch supressor plug can dull the overall sound (if set agressively), so I typically just skip that & zoom in on the offending pop, mouse draw the spike to a normal level, and 99 times out of 100 it will remove the pop with no adverse affect on the rest of the audio.

I didn't need all the bells & whistles in the SF10 Pro version, just a good solid audio editing proggy with additional features: cd rips, publish to web, burn to cd, etc and Audio Studio is more than adequate.

One thing I positively hate in SF is if you have to put in a fade-in/out or a volume envelope, this little unexpandable, unzoomable, unscrollable window popup is displayed.
You can apply an envelope to a smaller section of the track if you highlight a section of the track first, and just that section shows up in the popup, but's real klunky to work that way.

If you don't highlight a section, the whole track is in the little popup.
Applying a volume envelope to that is like using a chainsaw to slice a tomato.

Wish they would have it so the envelope is displayed in the main screen so you can zoom in and adjust in finer detail.
Other that that, it's great for what it can do at a great price.

2Beeps when using audio restorationAug 20, 2011
By Carol of SJ "Carol"
I downloaded the trial version of this, and was pretty happy with how it worked. However, after installing the actual version, I get beeps inserted into the recording when I use audio restoration. I submitted a support request, and have heard nothing back in two weeks. I tried following directions I found on their website for a clean uninstall and reinstall (minus the steps involving removing the .NET versions - really? do I want EVERYTHING on my computer to be broken, and have to reinstall?) I purchased this primarily for digitizing old audio recordings (cassette), and I really need the audio restoration feature. This would get 4 or 5 stars without this issue - it's easy to use and worked pretty well. How frustrating that the demo version worked and the actual products doesn't!

1STOPPED WORKINGJan 31, 2012
By Daria Long
I don't know if someone sold me a used one & tried to pull it off as new or what but it caused my computer to act like it had a virus. Also, my computer is the new i5 desktop with Windows 7 and my computer said that this program wasn't compatible dispite that it says it's compatible on the box & in the specifications. I called Sony was on the phone with them for about 3 or 4 hrs and they couldn't understand why the program wasn't working so they said they would investigate the matter with their technicians but I didn't want to be bothered anymore so I just decided to return it. I had to clean my computer up and revert to factory settings to get it acting normal again. I had it literally for 3 days when it just stopped working....I may try it again in the future because I think I might have just gotten a bad one or the more updated version but it won't try for a while

Also, for the 3 days that it did work, I didn't find the physical appearance of the software to be very attractive or colorful or fun to use like the Mixcraft5. I really really like the setup of Mixcraft but I am using this for work and the Mixcraft doesn't convert files to Flac or other formats so I may still have to buy another software in addition to the Mixcraft
