5Excellent. Simple. No air bubbles.Mar 09, 2011

I've owned many different compasses over the years. The Silva Ranger is the most reliable and trouble free. As compared to the Brunton versions which WILL develop a bubble (more irritating than anything else) over the lifetime of the compass. My Ranger has been around for well over 10 years... No bubble.

4A Good Compass for Geologic MappingJun 17, 2011
By M.Strong
I just got back from spending a week taking strikes and dips in the field. I really like this compass. It's not the same as using a Brunton, so if your used to the Brunton it will take you a little while to figure this one out, but it does the trick. I haven't used it to measure section yet, and I'm not sure if it could be made to fit in a Jacob's staff. It definitely won't fit in a Jacob's staff that's set up to be used with a Brunton, so that's one reason that I gave it four stars, but I think that it could be used to measure section if one made a staff specifically to fit this compass. The other reason that I gave it four stars is because Sunto makes an almost identical compass that can be removed from it's lanyard via a removable clip. It's slightly more convenient that the Silva. All in all it's a great compass for taking strikes and dips.

5Silva Ranger 515CL compassOct 07, 2008

I was reluctant to order the Silva Ranger because of unfavorable reviews about how it is not like the original model, and does not live up to expectations.

I expected the worse, but the Ranger arrived in perfect condition and is absolutely excellent in every aspect.

This is my best compass purchase ever. Very highly recommended to all who want a high quality compass.

2leaky Silva compassMar 28, 2012

The Silva 515 compass I purchased is already worthless and I never got to use it beyond checking it out. In less than two years the glycerine leaked out which makes the compass inoperable. The left over glycerine wets the needle just enough to make it stick to the case. There is no indication of where the glycerine leaked out. $53 down the drain. It doesn't say where it is made so I'm guessing this is more cheap China crap!

I bought one of these compasses in 2010 and it worked great...right up until it got a bubble last week. Luckily I bought it at REI and there it now sits in a return bin. I will be switching to a Brunton.

Oh, a friend has the same compass and it also developed a much larger air bubble than mine.
