Pretty goodAug 29, 2006
By Aaron Linsdau This is a much better handling compass than the Brunton engineer lensatic style compass. The one weakness of this model is the spinning lid. It is nice to have but it makes it easy to take a wrong bearing because the lid spins too freely. Also, there is no detent or marking for exact alignment with the physical case - you have to guess.
Other than the poor top spinning lid, this lensatic compass is quite superior to the compeditor's offering.

This is the OneMay 27, 2008
By Mike Sometimes you can just pick up an object and you know it is well made. The Silva Lensatic 360 Compass is one of those objects.
The body is very solidly built aluminum. The pieces fit together well, and, most importantly, the hinges for the cover and the magnifying glass don't feel cheap, like they will snap off with repeated use.
The compass itself works great and "centers" in only a few seconds. The crystal is engraved with two sighting lines, so no worries about these lines wearing off over time. The bezel luminesces well at night.
The bottom line is that this is a great lower end compass at a great price and this guy will be in my pack for years to come.

silva compass, perfect for the everyman...Feb 01, 2007

This compass is not only affordable but is also made very well. It is very sturdy and made with a heavy metal that won't likely break without a fight. It is very clearly marked for finding north and super accurate. Without a doubt the best buy online for a compass.

Solid, not infallableJan 29, 2010
By DaveClarkVibe It is a solid compass, made in Taiwan. Very light.
however, it does take it a while to get it's bearing and can fluctuate fairly significantly, and likes to be on a very level surface, thus making it less than ideal for it's purpose. That said, it is much better than similarly priced all plastic types.

BulletproofOct 06, 2007
By Miner2341 I bought this compass several months ago, and it has worked flawlessly. In addition, I have accidentally dropped it onto concrete and other very hard surfaces numerous times, and it continues to work perfectly. I am more than pleased with it; it was well worth the price.
