Cool, but must modify to work well...May 05, 2011
By PenchantForHoarding SUMMARY: Out of the box the sound is terrible. BUT - with a quick modification, problem solved - a great, portable speaker system.
Conceptually, this is a really cool concept... battery free, rechargeable from a portable solar panel, external battery pack, any USB cource, and has a great zippered carry pouch to stow cables, ipod, phone etc...
That said, right out of the box, I thought my unit was a dud. Obviously, this isn't a Bose sound dock, so I'm not expecting a symphony from this small little box... but I tried it with my ipod and phone, and well, the sound sucked. All mid range and no highs - extremely muddled. Initially I thought maybe there was a high frequency driver that was defective.
So, I compared to some low, low end radio shack portables side by side. Something was wrong. I was annoyed. So, I used a 2" cold chisel to separate the soft shell/fabric case from the speaker box and remove the guts. Problem solved!!
THE VERDICT: The battery/amplifier/speaker box is a self-contained solid recutangular module that slips into the soft fabric/foam sheath. The two small speaker drivers are mounted within a solid particleboard enclosure. Trouble is, the overall case - probably 3/8" foam plus external fabric covers the speakers. The perforations are useless - like holes in a salt shaker to let the sound through. Bottom line, the sound is like the speakers are wrapped in a blanket because, well, they are. Poor design.
WHAT TO DO: Use a large flat screwdriver, putty knife or some such to work around the seam between the unit and the case. Once free, it slips easily in and out - you can then have the speakers playing in the open - sounds WAY better! You can even put them back in the case backwards. This in no way damages the device - easy mod. If you don't do this, you will be bitterly disappointed.
If modded, I give 2 thumbs up.

First a bang, then a fizzleOct 30, 2011
By Teach This speaker was great...at first. I haven't quite had it two months, and it has been used only modestly in that time. I read the reviews first, and there were some that criticized the sound. I was actually just fine with the sound. I work in education and travel to schools to give presentations. This little speaker produced enough sound for a typical classroom. I loved the design. My other use was to take it to our office gym for workouts, and I liked being able to tuck my iPod inside and hang the speaker on the machine while I worked out. I was also thrilled with the rechargeable battery in the design. I guess it's because I was enjoying it so much that I'm particularly disappointed by its too-soon demise. It has not been subject to harsh treatment, and in less than two months, the electronics stopped working. Unacceptable. A waste of money. A waste of materials. Make it to last, please, or don't make it at all.

Far exceeded my expectations!Jul 04, 2011
By Derrick360 I am amazed at the loudness and clarity of these tiny speakers! I had an old iHome iPod boom box that was four times the size of the rockout and required 8 C batteries, and this little system sounds louder and cleaner. I like how I can attach the rockout to my belt and store the iPod inside the case. The battery also lasts very long and can be recharged with the Nomad 7 solar panel. Overall I am extremely happy with my purchase. I recommend product to anyone requiring big sound in a tiny package. I would disregard the comment below talking about modifying the speakers. They sound fine with no modifications. I would assume that any mods would void the warranty.

Not worth buying.Feb 20, 2012

I bought this for my hubby before Christmas and also bought one for my brother. Neat speaker with great sound. I was very impressed. However within a week it stopped working(very light use). I returned it-it cost me about $10 to post-the company were very good and sent me a replacement. The replacement lasted about 4 weeks with minimal use. I absolutely would not recommend. It is a waste of money and time in my opinion. Would recommend the company use better parts to make this product as the concept and design is great. I also have had a iHome iHM60GT Rechargeable Mini Speaker and have to say it is a little workhorse and has never let me down, The iHome I have bought for numerous family members and they all say it is a dynamite little speaker.

reached thier goalOct 01, 2011
By Michael A. Guerra The first Goal0 90401 Rockout Speaker I ordered was for my daughter. I was very impressed so much so i ordered two more for myself. My daughter likes to hook hers up to her Droid Phone and her laptop.I will try mine with bird calling in the great outdoors and other applications. The built in rechargeable batteries is a wonderful feature and stays in line with the other Goal0 products., The name Rockout Speaker is a bit misleading. This is a extremely versatile product. My review is two thumbs up.
