3i'm a golfer, and this game has problems...Jun 25, 2006
By Joshua Myers "shua"
This review is more for the interested ACTUAL golfer. I love this idea for games. I'm excited about Nintendo's wii, but this particular simulation device just isn't working for me. First of all, when you swing the plastic club, it has a very different feel than a real club. I believe that they calibrated the device for when you swing a real club, because I tried it with one. With a real club it was accurately simulating my swing power. With the plastic club, there is a very fine line between 110% and 70%. However, with the plastic club I find that it is not accurate how it recognizes different club lengths and how you swing them, so it's hard to figure out why it is topping the ball, slicing, or hooking. With a real club, for some reason, it hooks like crazy. I know my swing, and I know it's not hooking, especially since I slice the ball more way more than hook it. I wish they had built in a customized calibration setting in the game. The device makes sense, I just think that they hurried the game design itself. For the non-golfer, this might not be a bad game as you can sort of adjust your swing according to the way the device is callibrated and it wouldn't be awkward. Not so for the golfer.

2Good idea but needs work.Apr 17, 2006

If you're golf video game fan do not buy this game! Your expectations will be too high and you'll be disappointed in the first 10 minutes!

First off, the graphics are horrible. When you look at the fairways they look like a 2-year old smeared brown and green paint together.

Second, the motion track system is not nearly as accurate as made out to be. In a few minutes I was able to hit 'perfect' shots on the Pro difficulty. Also, if you miss hit theres really only 3 misses....short, hook, or slice. The degree of hook and slice does not seem to vary and its the same everytime you hook or slice the ball. Also, its hard to control distances with your clubs. In Tiger Woods, you can stick a 4-iron on a dime from 225 out if you need too. Yeah that doesnt happen everyday in the real world but I was expecting to be able to play to certain parts of the greens instead of praying the by choosing less club and allowing the ball to run up to the green that hopefully, with some miracle, I would end up pin high.

Third, the concept is great. However, using the system feels clunky and difficult. The little club you hold is annoying, I found it easier to make good contact by simply placing my palms together like I was praying, didn't even use the club.

Oh yeah, and the courses themselves are weird. Yeah I can understand they aren't licenses courses and everything but still, give us some variation and actually study some real courses to see what one is setup like. If you're gonna put a pond 225 out from the tee at least give us a club that can consistently carry that number.

This game was definitely a let down for me. I was following its release heavily, reading reviews from over seas from the previous release and everything sounded great, but once I got it..boy I was dissapointed. So I sold it on a 'leading auction site' the same day and had it shipped out the next day.

3Can't get the full swingAug 24, 2006
By Rodney W. Cogbill "slow-hand"
Fundamentally, the concept and mechanics of this game are great. However, due to the short plastic club that is provided, you cannot duplicate your real golf swing. So, the true value of it helping your "real" golf game kind of goes by the wayside. Being able to swing- and have it motion-captured- is cool because you really do control the action.

2Really Cool Idea but it Just Doesn't WorkMar 27, 2009
By Lisa Shea "medieval swordfighting enthusiast"
Real World Golf for the original XBox had a pair of gloves you wore - connected to cables - that let you actually "swing" your hands and have the golf ball react appropriately. This was in pre-Wii days!

Here's how it works. There's a unit on the floor. Two cables are on swivel joints and come out of that floor unit to a pair of gloves. You velcro those gloves onto your hands. The cables extend and retract smoothly as you move the gloves. So as you swing your hands in a golf swing shape, the gloves track your progress and know what you're doing.

Standing in front of a large screen TV, swinging your hands, holding onto a "mini-club" (so you don't hit your lamp or other living room items), it really is "like being on a golf course". So in that sense this setup is far more realistic than any button-pushing version of golf could be.

I give them great kudos for the interface. You push your hands out to zoom along the course. You wave a hand to move in that direction. It is very Virtual Reality type of stuff, like you saw on the Tom Cruise movie "The Minority Report".

Now, with all of that said, the golf gameplay is NOT great. No matter how cool the interface is, it doesn't do much good if the game itself is not well done.

You can't fault the graphics too much. This was after all a low-def game and the maps it was rendering were very large. They are a bit clunky, but that's fine. The game should have been about balls and physics, not about whispers of grass.

But the golf game has issues. If you set it on "easy", you pretty much have a guided missile that always goes into the hole. That's fine if your aim is just to walk through the course, but even beginners to golf should get some accurate feedback so they can improve. I tried swinging the club wildly from high left to low right and I still putted right into the hole. To say it was forgiving would be an understatement.

My boyfriend who actively plays golf every day or two tried it at pro level. Even there the sensors were just not very accurate.

I understand that this was a huge challenge for them to create. They had to try to "guess" based on the cable being pulled quickly or slowly exactly what your hands were doing. I know that is hard and I give them credit for even trying this at all. It was a great idea - but it just didn't work out well.

I think the clearest indication that they had problems is that they never came out with a version for the XBox 360 or PS3. Apparently they just gave up. With the Wii being able to do this type of sensing without wires, I think that is the way to go in the future. Cables just can't sense the fine details of where your hands are moving in three dimensions.

5The Best Game Of All TimeApr 23, 2006

I love this game! I wish I could play it everyday! It is one of the best virtual reality games I have ever played! It doesn't have the best graphics but the game play is wonderful! I would suggest it to anyone of any age! It is the best and only virtual golf game out on the market for xbox.
