    5Save yourself a bundle: As good as what an attorney will do.Nov 04, 2011
    By D. Reinstein "marindavid"
    Some years ago, my wife and I have a volume of "Testamentary Documents" drawn up by an estate planning attorney. For the "special friend reduced rate of nearly $2000., he produced a set of documents that are exactly parallel to the ones we could create ourselves by using this software. We rewrote everything, updated what needed changes, and eliminated any reference to that attorney from our estate documents. $49, is a lot less the $2000.!
    This software is comprehensive. It includes everything needed - including the Living Trust - something that is imperative if you want your inheritees to be able to avoid going through the anguish (and expense) or Probate.
    Yes, it takes time. I did it in a series of five sessions with our financial information in front of me for reference as well as older and now obsolete versions of these documents. It compares rather favorably to the time we spent organizing our data and then actually sitting with the attorney.
    Nolo has produced a broad range of "do-it'yourself' legal documents. This package is, I think, among the clearest, most user friendly (the built in guides and tips are extremely helpful and easy to understand). Moreover, it is something that most people actually need at some point.
    It is never too early to prepare these things and editing/changing them in the future is pretty straight forward. Why pay an attorney exorbitant fees for doing something that anyone who can follow directions can do for themselves? THe more complicated the estate, the longer it will take and, to be sure, some people's situations may require porofessional assistance. The small percentage of people who need that should certainly get it.
    For most of us, this Nolo software is exactly what the doctor ordered... and what the estate planning attorneys hope you never discover.
    Buying this is a very smart $40. investment.

    4Great product, but file translation needs to be fixed.Nov 01, 2011
    By S. Brown "Mac User"
    PROS:
    User interface is great
    Easy way to make an accurate, important document
    Introductory video is clear and informative
    Free updates are automatic
    Currently, Amazon price for CD with book ($36.94) is reasonable; software available as download-only from NOLO site for $34.99, or with CD for $51.99.
    Package includes abridged edition of "The Legal Answer Book for Families"

    CONS:
    Free updates are only available through end of 2012
    This program is still not available for Mac OSX
    The data from my 2006 files were lost when it was opened in this version. (downgrade for this)
    No upgrade path readily available; software is valid through 2012 only (updates no longer available after 2012, but software should still run, albeit with possibly outdated data).
    Registration purportedly includes:
    * Expert technical support
    * Significant discounts on Quicken WillMaker upgrades; and
    * A $10 coupon for purchase on nolo.com
    What I got was:
    * a free electronic download of "101 Law Forms for Personal Use";
    * a coupon code for 15% off items at nolo.com
    ----------

    NOLO press is famous for creating easy-to-understand legal books and software. I previously used WillMaker 2006 and found it to be a good, solid program that was relatively painless to navigate. This edition is somewhat improved from that version. The software automatically looked through my files for any old versions of my will and asked if I wanted to open the one it found. The file was opened and supposedly translated from the old version to the new format automatically and made available for editing. Since creating a will requires digging up and entering a significant amount of information, using and editing my past data would have significantly reduced the time required to create the new one. However, ALL of my data was lost in the translation; I was left with a blank file with only my name on it. Bad!!!
    WillMaker includes the ability to create a will and/or five other major, applicable documents:
    * Health Care Directive (Living Will and Power of Attorney);
    * Durable Power of Attorney for Finances;
    * Final Arrangements (non-binding instructions for those caring for your remains); and,
    * Information for Caregivers and Survivors.

    4Excellent for what it doesJan 19, 2012
    By Rich L "Frequent Reader"
    This product provides a workmanlike and thorough pass through basic documents. It's laid out logically, and the novice should have no problem creating a strong legal document. However, there's no way it can handle most of the special cases that arise for many. Does your family include children that are his, hers, and ours? Do you want to set up special education trusts or funds for your grandchildren? Want to provide for a wayward son, but only if he goes back to college and gets that degree? You're pretty much on your own (or in the hands of a lawyer) if you do. This software is great value for the money--no attorney will look at your situation for less than 10x the price of the software, but only for fairly simple situations will it be complete. Even so, you might use the package to start with and develop your ideas, then take it all to an attorney for finishing up your special situations.

    5Much easier than previous versions ... seems to do the jobNov 18, 2011
    By Igelfeld "enpassant_z"
    First, an important qualifier ... I'm not a lawyer and have no legal background. So I cannot provide a review on the quality of the wills and other documents that this software produces.

    But I have installed and created a will with this software and so my feedback is based on the ease of installation and use of the software. The installation of this software was seamless and in my opinion can be done by anyone that is remotely computer savvy. The actual execution of the program is just as simple. It's menu driven and has prompts to lead you through the decision making part of creating the will. The net result is not something that looks fancy on a printout, but it certainly looks legally binding and covers the very basics. My own will is fairly straightforward, but the software does have incredible flexibility to allow different partitioning of your assets. In addition, it provides for defining legal guardianship in case of death as well as other decisions including health care directives. My guess is that unless you are in an incredibly complicated financial and property situation, the software is likely applicable for you.

    This software is a major improvement of at least one older versions of other Will-making software. The one that I used was very difficult to navigate through and it wasn't always clear that I was headed down the correct path in creating the will.

    Why 5 stars?

    Quite honestly, this program had everything that I wanted in a legal software. At the end, I felt it was comprehensive and I was confident that it addressed everything that I was concerned about prior to generating the will. I also know that the LA Times in their financial "letters to the financial advisor" provided a pointer to this very software for a reader that wanted to create a basic will. I doubt that the LA Times is getting any kickback from Quicken. Quicken is generally a well respected name in software and for me, that is also a factor.

    Overall, I'd highly recommend this software for the average person who wants and needs to make a will. At the very least, it will get you thinking about important issues such as: what do I want to happen to my children in case of my death, do I have a concise list of all my assets and where do I want them to go after my death, how do I want my health care and estate managed in case I'm in a coma or other life threatening situation. Of course, there are many more questions, but this is just a sample.

    3Easy to use but limited optionsOct 02, 2011
    By Randy
    This software is fine for the most basic of situations where you want to leave everything to one beneficiary with a couple of contingent beneficiaries. I do like the options to name a domestic partner and also a caretaker for pets. Input is easy, but the software is very limited in its ability to name multiple layers of beneficiaries. Also, there are few options to control the layout of the printing, and it's not possible to pre-fill dates, witness names, etc. Basically, you take what the software offers you with no ability to control the final output. If you remember the old Quicken Lawyer software, be aware that this product compares unfavorably. This software seems very simplistic. Maybe that's the aim. This may be a minor concern, but some of the questions aren't grammatically correct. Another minor concern, but the desktop icon is unattractive and obtrusive. All things considered, this software is barely adequate and mediocre at best.
