4Does not charge two smartphones that pull alot of currentAug 29, 2010
By Anh Lai
This supposedly has 1 amp per port. This is false, it does not. I have a Droid X and a Droid 2 in the house. It will not charge them both at once. They each require 850ma. It will however charge one of the Droids and one dumb samsung phone requiring much less current. This device is nice, but I wish it really pushed out 1A per port. It would work great for those who simply need to charge one smartphone and one device that requires less current, e.g. a bluetooth headset. A minor setback for me, but others may not be in the same boat.

5Works Better Than ExpectedOct 31, 2010
By D. Redwood
I bought this PowerBlock Dual Universal Charger to run my HP Multimedia USB powered speakers but hoped to be able to run my iPad as well. The iPad uses a 2.1 amp charger and the USB powered speakers requires 1 amp.

I connected both the iPad and speakers to this charger at the same time and they both worked fine. I watched a video on the iPad while listening to the speakers at a high volume to determine if the charger can handle it. It not only handled the load without any problems, but it also charged up my iPad to a full charge.

I discovered that there are two versions of this PowerBlock Dual Universal Charger. This one provides 1 amp per USB port and the other one produces only 500 ma per USB port. The good one advertises the 1 amp per USB port capability, while the other one does not. Also, this one shows the 1 amp per USB port on its packaging and on the unit itself. By all means get this better one, not the less capable one, as it can handle more devices.

I travel a lot and needed a small lightweight USB charger that can power my USB speakers, which saves weight and space. This can help avoid paying overweight charges at the airport which can be quite expensive (some portable speakers have a heavy power supply or built-in rechargeble battery that you must carry around). Also, I like the fact it can handle an input of 100v-240v so it can be used in any country.

Update: My daughter liked this charger so well that she got one for herself to power her iPhone and HP USB Mini Speakers. These mini speakers produce great sound from the iPhone, and this charger will power the mini speakers and charge the iPhone at the same time.

5Works perfectly well!Sep 16, 2010

Some of the earlier reviewers complained that the charger is not powerful enough to recharge combinations of certain USB devices with higher than average power consumption. I wonder if they used the previous model of the PowerBlock. I tested this charger with all possible combinations of the three USB devices I use most: Kindle 3, BlackBerry Curve 8530, and iPod Touch 64GB. In all combinations I tested, PowerBlock worked fine charging the connected devices quickly.

1Packaging says 2 amps, 1 amp per port BUT only 1 amp TOTALJun 03, 2011
By Charlie
I bought this after carefully reading the reviews first. I specifically ordered the 2 amp powerblock. I received it, read the packaging before opening which clearly said 2 amp total, 1 amp per port. A few days later I went to charge my ipod touch and blackberry and they wound not charge. So I put in my ipod and my sony reader, nothing. I put the reader and the blackberry, still nothing. I tried this with various combinations of other devices. When I plugged in only one device, it worked well.

Upon closer examination of the powerblock itself, it states 1 amp total. So clearly there is a problem with the maufacturer. Their packaging says one thing, while the block says another. So I can't blame the seller since they sold the correct item. So be wary and let's hope you are not the unlucky one that has the right package and wrong block.

I own alot of griffin products and swore by them, but this is disappointing.

4Watch the order in which you plug things in...Oct 26, 2011
By Bud Lowe
I scoured the internet for what I thought would be the best deal on a powerful dual USB charger and settled on this one. My initial impression was good. The build quality is good, the size is nice, and I got one that says 1000mA per output (*see customer images). I used it for a week while on vacation with my wife. We each have a MyTouch 4G (Android) phone that comes with a stock 1000mA charger. This PowerBlock performed exactly like it should without any hesitation.

The problem surfaced when I took it to work with me. The whole reason I bought this was that I travel for work and have been recently assigned a Blackberry Curve 9330 (750mA stock charger) and I want to charge them both bedside in the hotel. I plugged my phones in, the Android LED lit up like it was charging, the BB clock/bedside mode activated like it normally does when charging and I went to bed. When I got up, the BB was unresponsive. Since this was the only charger I brought with my, I couldn't troubleshoot much except to unplug, replug it (didn't work), unplug/replug the PowerBlock (didn't work), and try charging the BB through my computer's sleep 'n charge USB (worked!)

Later I tested things out and came up with the following:

If I plug my Android in first and then my BB, then:
1) *My Android pops up a USB selection like it has been plugged into a computer asking if I want to tether, charge only, or disk drive.
2) The BB goes into 'bedside mode' like it's charging even though it is not.
3) If I back out of bedside mode I may or may not get a popup on my BB saying *"The charging source connected to your BB device cannot charge..." and a subsequent *"Verify that your computer is not in standby, hibernate..." message.
4) *The battery icon on the BB does not show a lightning bolt, but does show a plug when on the battery info page.

If I plug my BB in first and then my Android, then:
1) BB goes into 'bedside mode'
2) *BB battery icon has a lightning bolt both on the main and battery info page
3) Android does NOT show a USB connection options but DOES also charge

It seems to me that somehow there is a data connection that connects the two phones if I do the Android first and that prevents the BB from accepting a charge because it's trying to get it from my Android. I'm not sure why my Android still charges in this case, but it does.

I hope this helps someone, if it does, click "Yes" on the helpful buttons below to move the review up the list. Thanks!
