1Customer Service NightmareNov 04, 2011

I have had very simalar experiences with CyberLinks technical support as others. I purchased this product reluctantly due to some of the reviews. I should have paid attention to my gut feeling about this company.

I tried to load the CD with the activation key supplied with the CD. Did not load, came up with an error that the actvation key was invalid. Tried several times, with same results. Contacted Technical Support with the issue and waited for a response. They wanted me to send them a scanned copy of Proof of Purchase and a snapshot of error msg. I sent them what they requested and waited and waited. A week later they get back to me and again want Proof of Purchase and a snapshot of my desktop. I got nothing but the run around from CyberLink. Can't speak of quality of product since never have got it to load. This is the worst costumer service I have encoutered. If anyone desides to purchase this product one better hope there are no issues and don't have to reach out the there Technical Support. I have since returned CyberLink PowerDVD 11 Ultra and feel relieved not to have to deal with this Company any longer. Thanks for all these informative posts! I just wish I would listen a little closer. In the future I will stay far away from any CyberLink Product. The worst support. If I could give a zero star I would, thats how bad this Company service is!

Since I purchased this software from Amazon, I have never been able to get it to work properly. But here is the true problem. Cyberlink has this so called customer service website. When you go to this site, you get sarcasm, they repeat in a return letter what it is you are complaining about. As though it is a joke, and they do not care.

You are forced to jump through hoops, like the activation code, the serial number, where did you purchase this software. Their true intent is to get you to fork over $50.00 for tech support. Avoid this software by all means.

52D-to-3D conversion has come of ageMay 31, 2011
By Klaatu Barada Nikto
After encountering some initial difficulties getting PowerDVD 11 to work (the latest Nvidia beta driver resolved them), I settled down to see if the positive press was true about its improved 2D-to-3D conversion compared to PowerDVD 10 (which I had thought to be quite good).

I can't say that I was satisfied; I can't say that I was impressed; I can only say that I was COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY. This is exactly the reason why I built a home theater PC, with all of its headaches, instead of purchasing an HDTV with 2D-to-3D conversion. I figured the technology would improve and I wanted to be able to take advantage of that improvement via software updates. I made the right decision. It has been painful at times to deal with my HTPC -- I'd say I've put in about fifty hours installing, uninstalling, configuring, reconfiguring, booting, rebooting, yelling, and screaming -- but if I had to do it all over again, I would. The simulated 3D is THAT good.

If you think I'm exaggerating, play the original HOUSE OF WAX using PowerDVD 11. I had to keep reminding myself that the image I was watching was simulated 3D, not the real thing. Try the STAR WARS movies. I had a grin from ear to ear watching the opening scenes. The climactic space battle in A NEW HOPE and the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK attack on the Hoth compound as well as the asteroid scene were absolutely stunning.

2D-to-3D conversion has now advanced to the point where it seems less like clever technology and more like sheer magic. It makes me want to watch every movie I love all over again. I love a lot of movies, so I'm going to be busy for a while.

My only regret is that this new release does not yet provide 2D-to-3D conversion of Blu-rays, a feature that was demonstrated at the January CES and garnered favorable reviews. I hope that this feature will show up fairly soon. But for the moment, I'm absolutely thrilled with the quality of the current DVD-only conversion software. (In addition to the previous version, PowerDVD 10, I have used Tridef, a quality product that has decent 2D-to-3D conversion and also plays older field-sequential 3D movies perfectly. But this converter outdoes both PowerDVD 10 and Tridef by a considerable margin.)

1Do Not BuyAug 22, 2011

This is in reference to PowerDVD 10. I have bought 3 versions of this software, I have no confidence that this will be any better - read on for the review of my previous experiences with this software.

This program does work, but is high maintenance. Constant reminders to upgrade to the newest version.

Worse it reminds the user of periodic updates (which I would expect) - except clicking on downloading (or cancelling) the updates freezes the program. The software updater is broken as well - after downloading it wants to remove the prior installation, and then it doesn't install.

I'm a system builder and have done more clean installs and repairs that I can count. NEVER have I encountered a program as difficult to work with as this one. Watching the last season of lost my family had to ensure a system reboot because of this program. I will keep my media PC for home (hi-def) movies, but I do plan on buying a standalone Blu-ray player instead of shelling out more money for this piece of junk. It is a shame, because I would like to find a good blu-ray player - but this is not it.

4Pretty Good Player of Digital MediaJul 28, 2011

CyberLink's PowerDVD is a jack-of-all-trades software that claims to play nearly all kinds of digital media on the market. This means it can play DVD and Blu-ray Discs in HD and 3D, as well as photo, video, and audio files on computers, MP3 players, and cellphones.

There are two PowerDVD play modes: Classic and Cinema. The Classic mode contains 5 Media Playback Tabs that you can easily use to access different types of media: Movie (optical disc media), Video (video files on computers), Photo, Music (audio files on computers or optical media), and Device (play media stored in devices such as MP3 players and cellphones on the PC, or use a portable device to control PowerDVD remotely from a distance). The Cinema mode is for watching movies from 10 feet away with a remote control.

I watched both Blu-ray and DVD discs using this software and both the video and audio performance are quite good (my notebook PC is four years old running Windows 7, with 4 Gb of RAM).

It is possible to capture DVD movie frames and save them as individual BMP files. Unfortunately, the user manual isn't well-written, so I had to call CyberLink to find out WHERE (c:\user\"user name"\my documents\cyberlink\powerdvd11\snapshot) the captured files are stored. You can change the file path to a place more accessible, such as the Desktop. To do that, you need to click the settings icon and wade through several layers of buttons to get there. Frame image capture is only possible for DVD, not for Blu-ray discs.

While watching a movie, you can pause it, then advance or reverse one frame at the time, to analyze action sequence. I used this feature to watch some super-fast-action parts of Bruce Lee's 1973 Enter the Dragon on Blu-ray. While advancing one frame worked, I often found the reverse button not effective. Anyway, I am thankful that this feature has demonstrated Bruce's speed that I have not been able to see before. Movies are shot at 24 frames per second. Bruce's punches were so fast that even individual frames are blurred and there is considerable fist travel distance between consecutive frames.

PowerDVD's user interface and user manual could stand some improvement, but as far as playing digital media, PowerDVD does quite well.
