Good, with reservationsJan 09, 2011
By OldBoyLarry After the first week of CyberLink PowerDirector 9 (PD9), results have been mixed.
Good: PD9 loads quickly and the interface is relatively straight-forward for software that does such complex things. I have yet to test its use of the graphics processor unit (GPU) I added to my Windows 7 computer before installing PD9.
Not so good: PD9 crashed twice as I tried to import a sizable number of media files. When I succeeded in the import, I sorted the media into sub-folders with the idea of using them for several future projects. However, the next time I ran PD9, the library and all its sub-folders was gone, apparently because libraries are associated with individual projects, and I hadn't thought to save anything as I hadn't started any projects. It would have been helpful to have this point made more clearly, and even more helpful to be able to assemble a library for use with multiple projects.
I wanted to burn a video created as an MP2 with another video editor and, after importing it and saving it as a Project, I used PD9's Publish feature. I didn't have time to go through and create a menu, but found it very confusing to get PD9 to stop insisting on putting a cheesy title screen and empty menu on the front of my video.
Bad: Thinking I could at least find some more tasteful title+menu combinations at CyberLinks on-line site, "DirectorZone", I discovered that their Web-host insisted on my entering some very specific demographic-marketing information about myself before being allowed to create a log-in ID. CyberLink then insisted on gathering yet more intrusive personal information, and I quit in disgust. None the less, I found a "Welcome" email shortly after that included my login name and password in plain text. Any confidence I may have had in their handling of private information is now gone, and I recommend that if you buy PD9, you stay out of their "online community".

Don't expect any usable customer supportFeb 04, 2011
By Garth O. Thoresen After reviewing a number of video editing software vendors, I chose Cyberlink's Power Director 9 Deluxe based on it's positive reviews and it's price. I am returning the product to Amazon (Note: I continue to be impressed with Amazon's customer service. They are just about the best company with which to work if there is a problem) and will probably never purchase a Cyberlink product again. I don't expect software to run perfectly every time. I've worked with far too many applications to expect otherwise. However, I do expect there to be some adequate tech support if there is a problem. My problem was the failure of PD9 to launch after the splash screen. I made sure my system was compatible and removed/reloaded the app a couple of times - no success. It was then that I sought out Cyberlink's tech support. I saw that in order to have the privilege of actually speaking with someone I would have to pay $30 for phone support. There was not even the option of real-time "Chat" support. Instead I had to write out my issue and send it to them. I waited for several days for a response and repeated my request for help. After a couple of attempts I got back a form email telling me try a few things (which I had already done). I replied and told them of my efforts. After another day or so I was told to send them my PC's specs. I did so. Then another day or two and I was told to send a screen shot of my Event Viewer. My EV showed no problems but I sent the screen shot anyway. That was a week ago and I haven't heard back. Needless to say, I'm less than thrilled with such a poor excuse for customer service and urge anyone looking at video editing software to either make sure this app runs on your system with no problems or steer well clear of Cyberlink.

Friendly interface BUT not stable for meDec 22, 2010
By Jean_Lussier When I tried PowerDirector 9 on my Windows-7 machine (32 bits mode OS), I had just finished a successfull evaluation of the 30 days trial of "Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10".
Never had any issue with this laptop during last 6 months and Sony-Vegas was stable too. But during 10 sessions, PowerDirector frooze 50% of the time on startup (with message of "Application not responding").
Sorry, but after 20 years in the Software business, I had enough of this. Life is too short to dig thru your forums for a solution for me and most users, it works or it does not - simple. My Toshiba is stable and Sony-Vegas was stable too, so I know which I will buy now.

Hangs when producing to DVD or Blueray, HD video stuttersFeb 08, 2011
By V. Soffel I bought this software to edit videos created with a Sony Nex-5 camera, which records videos in 1080i AVCHD format.
The original recorded video clips (transferred from the camera's SD card to computer), play fine without a glitch. One sample clip is of a landscape with a slow left to right pan over the scenery. As said the original clip just plays fine, not stutter or jerkiness. All I do in Power Director 9 Deluxe is to put that short video clip onto the timeline and then "produce" the video. I tried: - H.264 AVC in 1080i, 1080P and my own customized profiles with a higher bit rate also as 1080i and 1080p All resulting video clips stutter like crazy. (the same PC plays Blueray disks and the original clip from the camera just fine. CPU load when playing the produced clips is less than 30%, so it is NOT the PC dropping frames). I played all clips on 3 different PCs, all show the stuttering.
-Windows media file (.wmv) using Full HD Quality (1920x1080) profile Still stuttering but to a lesser extend. Resulting video quality is horrible. Lots of visible block artifacts. PowerDirector offers no possibility to create your own customized profile (With higher bitrate for example to reduce the blocking)from Windows Media.
- Quicktime Full HD Quality Video also stutters.
- Create disk output of a larger project (20min video with about 8 transitions and one additional audio track): I chose the option to save the disk structure to harddisk rather than burning directly to DVD/Blueray disk. to Blue ray disk folder structure: software hangs and never finishes to DVD disk folder structure: software hangs and never finishes.
The same video project produced as a Windows media file and H.264 AVC file complete successfully, but: H.264 file is missing the additional audio track (!) Both Windows media and H.264 file show the same stuttering described above for the left to right pan scene.
First attempt in creating the H.264 showed corrupted video (large block artifacts) at the beginning of the resulting video file. Re-doing the same file again got rid of that.
I've installed the latest PowerDirector patch 2504 from January 2011, still same problems.
I spend hours messing with PC video settings trying to fix the problem. The camera captures video with 1920x1080 with a 29.97Hz frame rate = 59.94(60i) interlaced picture rate. The display and PC graphics card are set to 59.94Hz progressive refresh rate (also tried 29.97Hz interlaced, 30Hz interlaced and 60Hz progressive), all settings show the same stutter. Other video, including the original video test clip right from the camera's memory card, Blueray disk, DVDs, Windows HD media from purchased DVD, cable TV SD and HD play perfectly on the same machine, which only leaves the conclusion that PowerDirector badly messes up the produced video.
Stay away this program is not ready for prime time.

Warning avoid CyberlinkJun 26, 2011
By FASTER220 I have had the unfortionate expeiriance of having to deal with their customer service. What they don't tell everyone is that their programs arent good for life. I have had to uninstall and reinstall their program about 5 to 8 time most due to the program itself and their patches. Plus I had to reinstal windows. When I installed it again and entered the key it sais this key has been used to many times and I need to contact customer support and purchase a new key. This is for a program I paid a hundred dollars for. Well I contacted customer service not to pay anouther penny but to get me program working again for free I already paid enough. Now I am registerd at their site where you can go check out your order and it displays your reciept. Still they ask me for proof I own the program then they send me bogus links and keys that do not work. ( I tried them using differant computers and the links dont work ) I told them I have the program I paid for already just generate a new key. The only key they sent sais use by 12:00am it wont work after that. ? So if I ever need to use it again it wont work for my life long program. Its been for weeks now they are trying to make my program work no luck. I cant even count the amount of times they had me reinstall and uninstall it plus download a cyberlink cleaner. Ya thats right you need a special cleaner from them to get rid of all their program. Plus they had me reinstall windows. Even then they still sent me a link to clean the computer. They are doing everything they can to waste my time and run me away. Finaly I said why dont you just download the file from your links and send it to me with a new key. No luck they said they cant. Ok I said then just give me a program that by updating would cost me 26 dollors and I would be done with them. I'm still waiting for an answer. So for 4 weeks plus 50 hours of my time. Still I am stiffed out of a program I paid $100 for. They have very very poor customer service and no way to call them. Since I needed a program like that I had to by Nero 10 plat. But I still want what I paid for from them. I must say there are better program out there for less and they dont hog your whole system up and way better customer service avoid this company if you expect to use a program for life. Becuase they will do whatever they can to steal your money.
