1Avoid at all costs -- horrible conversion quality with lost audioNov 23, 2009
By Scott Rose "Computer Geek"
Beware of this product. Roxio should be ashamed of themselves for producing such an awful product with Popcorn 4.

We have a brand new 13" MacBook Pro with 4 GB RAM running Mac OS X 10.6.2, and we've been trying for days to use Popcorn 4
to convert unencrypted DVDs into MPEG4 format.

The results? ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. Completely choppy audio at ANY setting, lots of pops in the audio, and worst of all -- completely lost audio because of audio skipping.

We even installed the latest software update to Popcorn 4 from Roxio's website, and the same problems exist. From a quick glance on the Roxio discussion boards on their website, we can see that we are not alone with our problems.

This Popcorn 4 product is a complete nightmare. There are plenty of FREE software programs available for the Mac which do a MUCH BETTER JOB than this product by Roxio. This product flat-out doesn't work.

For more definitive proof of how this product does not work, just visit the discussion boards on Roxio's website.

1Too bad there isn't an option to rate this zero stars.Mar 07, 2010
By Rick Snyder
I bought this primarily for the Tivo Transfer program. Too bad it doesn't work. At all. There's no indication in the product description here on Amazon or on the Roxio website that Popcorn doesn't play well with Snow Leopard; in fact, it says it will run on OS X 10.6. It appears that the only way to make it work would be to install earlier versions of Java and even then there's no guarantee. Roxio support is atrocious. If you've got an earlier version of OS X on your Mac maybe this will work for you. As for me, I just paid $40 for something that's useless. Lovely.

1Useless for TivoHD, restricted to very low resolution (480x360)Jul 17, 2010
By Jamshid Afshar
Popcorn is useless for Tivo. Even for the few channels that don't prevent downloading, the best export resolution you can get from Popcorn is 480x360. That looks bad on a mobile, horrible on an iPad. As the Maclife review said: "On the home front, Popcorn can transfer and process video to and from a networked TiVo Series 2 or later, but similar DRM rules kept us from using our shows how we wanted. Even if you have HD TiVo recordings, Popcorn only exports at a 480x360 resolution in order to keep the TiVo and network gods satisfied. Some content providers won't let you transfer shows at all."

3Does exactly what it says it will, but...Apr 28, 2010
By R. M. Lozano "texasmountains"
Now admittedly, I am using this product for only one of the many things it claims to be able do - making backup copies of my personal DVDs. I have found that it works perfectly well for doing exactly that, and I have had no troubles. How well it can handle Tivo, or a related program, I have no idea, but if you're purchasing this to copy DVDs to other DVDs for whatever reason, and with whatever other software handy, it works extremely well, exactly as it claims to - a safe and solid purchase!

Update: You need to get another program (I use Lil' Snitch) that will alert you when roxio popcorn is trying to connect to the internet, so you can prevent it from doing so. After a while I noticed that it would connect, and then when it would try to verify the DVD problems would occur and it would waste the disk. You can overcome this problem by 1) preventing it from connecting in the first place, and 2) skipping the verify process and going straight to "mount" once the disk is written.

5great product -- burns DVDs and converts videos wellFeb 11, 2011
By Bradley Monton
Popcorn 4 has gotten solid reivews from reputable tech websites and magazines, so I decided to ignore the negative reviews on amazon and buy it. I'm glad I did -- it's done a great job for me. I had large video files that I wanted to compress to burn on a DVD, and it did that with no problem -- the interface is quite intuitive and easy to use. It's also good at converting video files from one format to another (e.g. to put a movie on my iphone).
