5What I neededJan 31, 2011
By Big Wheel
Purchased the Absolute Outdoor Onyx M-24 Belt Pack Manual Inflatable Life Jacket (PFD) not because I have a boat, but because I have a stand up paddle board and I do not want to be given a ticket/fine from the Coast Guard when paddling in the Marina. The Coast Guard regulates that stand up paddlers must have a "flotation device" on them or the board while paddling "outside the surf zone". (Yes, I know the board itself IS a flotation device, but you try telling that to the Coast Guard as they are writing you up.)

Anyway, for my specific needs, I wanted something compact and unobtrusive and the Onyx Belt Pack (PFD) fits like a oversized fanny pack, so it stays out of the way while you are paddling. For the record, I am not an expert on flotation devices, but the Onyx Belt Pack (PFD) seems well thought out and designed. Nice touch is a small zipper pouch convenient for storing keys, I.D., etc.

Important to note: I never pulled the cord to inflate/test the device nor do I ever intend to do so. Again, I just don't want a $400 ticket.

Also worth mentioning, I had to contact Absolute Outdoor, Inc. to get a small part (green Indicator Tab) replaced, and they gave me prompt, no hassle service and sent out three extra tabs at no charge.

In conclusion, I am not qualified to state how the Onyx Belt Pack (PFD) ranks against all the other flotation vests out there on the market, but it is Coast Guard approved, the price was competitive, and the vest pack is size appropriate for stand up paddle boarding. In short....just what I needed.

5Light weightSep 17, 2010
By Alex Duncan
Just wore this belt pack in a 2 1/2 mile SUP race.
It is so light weight I didn't even know I had it on.
It was not cumbersome at all.

4SUP purposeJan 31, 2011

GIven that one is required by law to wear a life vest while paddling an SUP, this one is light, comfortable and relatively unobtrusive. We have not had to deploy it.

5Keeps her happyNov 01, 2011
By Richard Roy
I fish on the ocean quite a bit, often alone. After hearing some nonsense about people drowning in the ocean, she started on me about safety and not going alone, blah blah. Well... I'm certainly not going to wear some big life jacket all day. This is a perfect compromise. Doesn't get in the way. Satisfies her. All good. Truth be told, it really is great to have added insurance out there. I also have a VHF waterproof radio strapped to me as well, so I can SOS if I'm overboard.

4Best unit for the priceAug 31, 2011
By F. F. Dumlao "violencejack"
This manual PFD is perfect for any paddling activity. I use it for Dragon Boat practices and races(where allowed) and it is convenient due to its size. The small accessory pocket is nice which makes it look more like a waist pack rather than a PFD. It is also thinner than some of the other inflatables which means it won't stick out so far in front or behind you depending on how you wear it. The final plus is that the CO2 cartridges are also significantly cheaper than other brands. All around good little PFD.
