If you use Windows 7 64-bit, proceed at your own riskMay 27, 2011
By Sandy In one sentence: I did exactly what the *Norton Utilities* dashboard suggested and lost everything on my brand-new computer.
In more than one sentence:
I purchased a computer (Win7 64-bit, home premium) April 2011 and it came with Norton Internet Security already installed with a free trial period. The computer was lightning-fast, the Internet Security program doesn't slow it down at all, and I was very pleased. Those were the days! Then I went online to sign up for a year's worth of protection. As I was doing this, the Norton website offered *Norton Utilities* for an additional $10.00. I figured it could not be a bad idea, so I added that to my cart and downloaded the program.
When I opened Norton Utilities to look around, I saw a 'dashboard' that told me my system 'health' was not optimal but which helpfully offered an option so the Utilities program could 'optimize' the computer's performance. Operating strictly from the Norton dashboard, I did EXACTLY WHAT THE PROGRAM SAID I NEEDED TO DO (I cannot emphasize this enough), which was to click on a button to optimize disk space (or words to that effect--what it ultimately did was run disk defragmenter), and then....my computer died. Couldn't boot up in safe mode, system was unable to find a restore point, couldn't do a system repair---spent half the night just getting Windows 7 restored. My computer has not been the same since this happened.
I went to Norton's website only to discover that the SAME PROBLEM goes as far back as 2009 and has been documented on their own boards in 2011 for version 15 of Utilities. I am completely gobsmacked that not only has Norton been unable to repair this problem in all this time, but they continue to inflict the problem on unsuspecting users. Seems as if all they would've had to do is disable that part of their Utilities optimizer if the OS is Windows 7.
Please, I implore you- if you decide to order Norton Utilities anyway: make sure you have your system restore disks handy, perform a full backup right before you install Norton Utilities, and make sure to have Norton's customer support phone number at hand. And for goodness' sake, don't let that smug little dashboard shame you into blindly doing what it asks.
I really hope that this review will help to inform your decision before you purchase Norton Utilities for a computer with the same OS as mine. As I said earlier, I'm a fan of Norton Internet Security, but I'll do a lot of research before I *ever* buy any other Norton product.

Norton Utilities v15.0.0.122Feb 13, 2011

Norton Utilities v15.0.0.122:
I ordered this version of Norton Utilities because my version 14 was coming up for renewal and I wanted to try the newer version to see if there were improvements over version 14, and there are. There are 5 sections to this newest version of Norton Utilities.
Optimize, Maintain, Recover, Windows Tools, and Administer are all subdivided into different working tools to help keep your computer running smoothly.
Optimize has the following subdivisions: Clean your registry which scans and safely cleans, repairs, and optimized your Windows registry. Defragment your registry which defragments and optimizes your registry. Tuneup your services which optimizes and manages your Windows services. Optimize your system which optimize and monitors your system for better performance. Clean your disks which cleans your computer and internet traces. Defragments your disks which uses SpeedDisk to optimize and defragment your disks.
Maintain has the following subdivisions: Shred your files, Health Report, Repair your disks, Manage your services, and Manage your startup. The shred your files has a function which can safely and securely clean selected files on your computer through drag and drop or from the recycle bin. The Health Report function shows you what areas of your computer need attention: Overall Health of your System ie., registry health, privacy health or disk health, and it will take you to the affected area as you improve both operations and functions. The repair your disks section is where you can takes care of your disk functions both check and repair and the master boot of your system and partitions of the disks. You can schedule a lot of the function and let the computer take care of what is needed or you have the option to control these functions yourself. The Manage your services function is your Service Manager, the list shown shows the performance of the third party services that are on your computer that are loaded when Windows starts. These impact both start up and shut down of your computer, you can control these making startup faster if you'd like. Manage and Startup shows you what manages your bootup, startup and all entry points and you can change these if there is a problem.
The Recover function has two subdivisions: Restore which you can view and restore previous backup and undo repairs. Recover deleted files is where UnErase recovers deleted files from your computer.
The Windows Tools section has 14 subdivisions which basically take care of management and control function both on the computer and devices, and events and security functions associated with having a clean running computer.
The Administer is where you can control your customization of your computer settings and functions along with a smart update function to keep your utility program up-to-date. The Administer funtion keeps you in control and keeps out others from changing settings.
I've had Symantec's Norton Utility programs on my computer for years and this is more comprehensive than others to date and it runs on schedule or on your schedule as you wish and it has greater flexibility and more control than previous versions. This is an intuitive program as the schedule function shows up throughout, giving you flexibility. A caveat is to be noted, you must un-install any previous versions of Norton Utilities prior to installation of this version and to run the smart update as soon as you install. There seems to be a large update from the beginning, then either update the program manually orthe program will update itself in the back ground when there is an update coming from Symantec. This program does well running in the back ground keeping function and operations clean.
You can get a free 30 trial version from Symantec's Norton Utility website. This is a very clean download from Symantec and the setup and presets were quick and easy with v15, but to be safe I checked to see if everything was set the way I wanted. I gave Norton Utilities v15.0.0.122 a 5 stars, ease of download, use, setup, and back ground function, that doesn't slow your computer down. Others may have some slowing of the computer, but that is due to the function of their computer. I'm running 16GB of RAM and an i7 processor and 2TB hard drives.

trial version for windows xpJul 06, 2011
By beachcomber2 I have Windows XP and downloaded a trial edition of Norton Utilities 15. After doing everything it said to do, my "system health" went from medium to the lowest rating in two days and it deleted all my passwords without asking, along with paths to some of my files. Now every time I try to reboot the computer I go through this nerve wracking situation with Windows Installer trying to reload the files with corrupted paths, but it can't, so it takes me forever to get going. And I stopped the scanner from starting every day and deleting my passwords all over again, wth.
I'm not a high tech person and don't know how to fix these problems, so have resigned myself to saving all my files and doing fresh reloads of my software and operating system. Years ago, I had the first version of Utilities on an older computer and didn't have all these problems with it. Just saying.

Norton Utilities Version 15 is an Excellent updateJun 29, 2011
By Laurence S. Martin The user interface is thoughtfully designed with just the right amount of detailed. This utility becomes a central location for managing your computer. Norton has added one button scanning which is a very useful tool and has generally improved the package
I have used Norton Utilities since MS DOS days and it continues to be an excellent set of utilities. My Operating system is Windows 7 professional 64 bit

Nice ProductMar 23, 2011

After reading some of the reviews I was not expecting much from this product. I was quite surprised that my system ran notably faster! While I did not run before and after benchmarks, subjectively I would say it resulted in about a 20%plus speed gain. I will also say that Norton Support has been stellar!! The online chats support is excellent for this product, Norton Internet Security and Ghost. This has traditionally been one of Nortons weak points, their tech support used to really be AWFUL! There tech support in my opinion is now one of their best features.
