2Worse than version 10Oct 18, 2011
By Jean Luc "Jean Luc"
I've used Nero since version 6 and have always found it to be a pretty good, but not great, suite of products. Burning ROM has always been great, and the "recode" tool has always been superior to anything else I could find. The other tools have always been meh in my opinion.

I personally am not happy with Nero 11. On the surface they make it look like they improved the Recode product, but it is actually less flexible and does a worse job than Recode 10. If you go to the Nero web site you will see a lot of complaints that they have moved in the wrong direction with this particular tool. Also, the Nero Video product (in version 10 was called Nero Vision) blows up performing operations that worked for me in version 10. I am running a powerful machine, Windows 7 with all latest patches, so there is no reason that version 11 should have issues when 10 did not.

I contacted Nero to see if I could get a refund, and there answer was just "No per our Terms and Conditions". They are a German company and thus do not have to abide by US laws, at least not if you purchase directly from them and download the software. I searched on this topic and found similar complaints on the web. They have my money now and I guess there's nothing I can do about that, but this is the last Nero purchase I will ever make.

If you want a whole suite of just OK tools, most of which aren't necessary if you have Vista or Windows 7 (such as their version of media center, their version of windows player, their version of back up, etc), then this may be a package for you. If you want a superior set of software, or want to deal with a company that values its customers, please shop for something else.

*** 2011-10-26 Update. Nine days ago I reported my issues about Nero Video to Nero Technical Support. I uploaded the files they requested and answered all questions about my system on that same day. I have sent 2 follow up emails asking for a status but have yet to get a reply. I've read other reviews that state that Nero Tech Support is terrible - it is.

*** 2011-11-08 Update. I received a note from tech support on 10-27 (the day after my previous update) asking me to resend my information and diagnostic files - so I did. Then eleven days later I receive another note asking if I will burn my video file on a DVD and mail it to them in Germany. Really? They don't have a way to FTP files to them for this purpose? At this point I think I'm giving up on tech support as it just isn't worth my time and extra money to ship international mail to these guys - especially when I'm not confident they won't lose anything I send them and then ask me to ship it again. Besides I've already purchased a different program for cutting commercials out of recorded TV and re-encoding them. Its called VideoRedo and is working great for that purpose. Wow - I really can't get over how poor Nero service is.

1Bloated adware - and all the old options are GONENov 08, 2011

they've really dumbed v11 down. none of the old options are available by simple menus. everything is workflow driven, and none of it makes any sense to a previous user. It might be easier to use for a grade schooler or grandparent who has time to waste to watch videos and go thru a 100 steps to get to anything useful. and you don't see what's coming, since only one or two things are picked on each screen. So you never really even know if you're headed towards the right place.

Oh, and why did next buttons become OK buttons? there's a big difference between "next" and "OK". the first says lets to to the next step. the second says "i'm done, start processing now".

I've uninstalled 11 and was getting ready to re-install 10, but I decided to just find a new program after years of using Nero. I don't plan on ever installing it again.

They will not give me a refund, either. Said I should have downloaded the 1gb demo installer to test it first. hey, I got almost daily emails pushing the new version FOR ONE MORE DAY ONLY at $49.95. I never thought they could have ruined it so completely! I was very wrong about that.

1Not the Nero I've come accustom toDec 06, 2011
By Michael Bentivenga "Big Kid"
I've also used Nero since version 6 and have always found it to be a great. My kids are with me at work a lot so I've amassed a library of movies (only non-copy protected discs) using Recode to crunch their type size and they used ShowTime to view them.

Now they are getting a little older they have IPods and I was able to convert some of the moves for them to view there.

My old laptop had Windows XP and Nero version 8. Purchased a new laptop, needed a new version of Nero compatible with Windows 7 x64.

New version of Recode hangs when it starts. I contacted Nero Technical Support. I uploaded the files they requested and answered all questions about my system and where the files came from, on that same day. I had to wait 3 weeks for a follow up emails asking for more files. 2 month has gone by and I have yet to get a reply or resolution.

BEFORE YOU BUY, read the other reviews that state that Nero Tech Support is terrible.

If you're only going to use this as a basic burning tool its fine (but honestly why waste the money, it's built into windows).

The kwik media tool will take over your machine and launch itself in place of other applications. It's like a virus, no matter how many times you reset the default application to something else; it always reverts back to kwik media. Contrary to the stated calms, it DOES NOT WORK WITH 3D BLU RAY, as it does not recognize the NVidia 3D hardware in my machine.

Personally, they've added so many other applications to the product (which are ok but not good enough to replace others) that they forgot why people used it in the first place. I think I've wasted $129. Shame on you Nero!!

1Simply not usableDec 13, 2011
By Brian J. Buehler "Brian"
Do you want to install the Ask Toolbar? For software that I've purchased, this is not what I want to see while installing (using the Administrator account - a standard user can't install Nero).

Like others, I've found the software to get worse with each generation lately. It doesn't help any that existing customers have to pay full price to get the new versions. Installation takes nearly half an hour on my quad core desktop. Uninstalling is about the same. After multiple tries using different versions of Nero 11, I still can not get a fully functioning product. My specific problem is that their updater is broken. It tries, finds some files and then resets the process in an endless loop. Only some of their reps are aware of the problem and their e-mailed workaround failed to work.

4 hours of my time gone and it's still not working

3A little bit of a pain in the butt to get installed.Dec 09, 2011
By J. Teasley
I tried the free trial and liked it so I ordered the full product at a great price from Amazon. I uninstalled the free trial since it was an old version Nero 9. Then I installed the new Nero 11 Platinum and the party started.

It installs a program and immediately tells you to download updates... Holly Molly! Three hours and three reboots later all the updates were installed. Tired I went to bed and decided to get to use it the next day.

The next morning there were seven new icons on my desk top... Nero 9 reappeared, parts of Nero 10 and the four pieces of Nero 11. At least the Icons for Nero 11 all had an '11' in the name so I deleted the short cuts for everything else. So far so good. But then every time I click on a video file, instead of going to the Nero 11 program it boots to the Nero 9 version. You cannot even go to choose other program with a right click because the program you want is not listed. If you specify the shortcut on the desk top it takes you to a Menu where you can select the program. I guess 'Windows 7' does not let you specify a shortcut as the default so you can not make the 'Open With' permanent.

I'll work around the frustration but not thrilled with the whole thing.
