Overall a good valueNov 04, 2009
By Mike Trantham The camera works as advertised. The software is a bit clumsy, and the driver tries to re-install if the camera is ever plugged into a different USB port. Focus and zoom are both accomplished with one setting, so sometimes it's hard to get precisely the zoom level that's desired. Also, the little button for taking a picture on the device itself is not very useful since it's hard to press it without disturbing the positioning of the camera.
In the end, though, it's a very useful device at a quite reasonable price. It can make very nice pictures of small details.

Max magnification is only 50XJul 28, 2010

I bought this microscope to look at things with my 3 year old boy. I had hoped for true 200X magnification which would allow me to look at a grain of sand or a hair.
The product looks very good; software installation was a breeze for me (I have Windows XP). But the maximum magnification turns out to be only 50X. I actually did a measurement; 1/8 inch becomes about 6 inches.
Also, max magnification can only be looked at by taking a picture then fully expand the picture. This is NOT in the instruction and took me some time to figure out.

Not a zoom. 20X or 200X But still worth the moneySep 10, 2010
By B. Johnson This USB microscope is written up as being 20X to 200X. This carries the implication that it is a true zoom microscope. Mine seems to be either a fixed 20 power or a fixed 200 power, depending on the settings made on the focus wheel. All in all a pretty good little microscope though, focusing is pretty easy and one can take pictures and movies easily, although I would recommend using the software to take the picture rather than the small button on the side of the unit because of camera shake when using the button. Image quality is pretty good. This obviously isn't a $ 3000.00 laboratory microscope, so don't expect that kind of resolution. One feature not mentioned is the ability to measure very small objects using the microscope. Measurement choice is microns, millimeters, pixels and inches, this feature will be very nice if you need it.

Make Sure you have XP SP3Dec 09, 2010
By Just Jeeps I purchased this device for documenting PC boards and small mechanical parts. I could not make it work, so I contacted the company. They were non-responsive as I had read from other reviews. So, I put the puzzle together myself based on how many other people were having problems, and discovered that you need to have SP3 installed and that SP2 doesn't work. Simple as that, and the manufacturer didn't even know it. Cool device, and easy to use with great pictures.

Short and SweetJun 20, 2010

For the money this microscope works very well - while the zoom (software) is not the greatest it still works quite well and provides detailed images. The fact it is movable over fixed microscopes opens it up to many uses. I have also used it as webcam sucessfully. I had no problem installing on Windows 7 along side my other (fixed) microscope software that also detects the VMS 001.
