1Warning! McAfee will protect you -- but not from McAfee pop-ups!Nov 25, 2010
By JM
Sure it works, but McAfee doesn't understand that McAfee is not exempt from the rules that its software enforces. They say they block pop-ups and adware. What they don't say is that they block all pop-ups EXCEPT POP-UPS THAT THIS PROGRAM GIVES YOU, ADVERTISING McAFEE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES!

If you install this, you will get:

1) Incessant pop-ups on your computer desktop asking you if you want to buy additional products or subscriptions from McAfee. Conveniently, McAfee Total Protection can't stop these pop-ups -- and McAfee support staff don't seem to understand why this is a problem. These McAfee pop-ups appear on your desktop and not in your browser, so any browser settings do not prevent them appearing. (The current round of ads is urging me to renew my anti-virus subscription, even though my current subscription doesn't expire for another 8 months.)

2) An entry called "McAfee" in the top-most level of your Start menu that you cannot move or remove. If you try, it will reappear within hours. Nice bit of advertising real estate, that, for it to say "McAfee" in the top level of your Start menu.

3) A desktop "McAfee" icon that reappears if you remove it. (There is a way to stop this particular annoyance, but you have to dig through the McAfee website for instructions, and following them requires you to tinker with your registry.)

If you write to McAfee and tell them that their ads are not welcome on your computer, you may eventually get the following response as I did from one of their brilliant tech support people:

"It is really unfortunate that your computer got infected by virus when McAfee was installed. I suggest you to try some of the ?Free Virus Removal Solutions? before contacting our technician through paid service. Please visit the below link which will provide detailed information about our Virus Removal Services." In other words, install McAfee, get McAfee ads, complain to McAfee, get an offer from McAfee to sell you a service to remove the "virus" that "your computer got ... when McAfee was installed."

So good software, EVIL COMPANY. Buy something else, as I will certainly be doing. Even if this one's free after rebate, it's still coming to you at a price.

ADDENDUM: After suffering through McAfee's advertisements for so long, I finally gave up on them fixing the problem and uninstalled McAfee in favor of NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2011 (Amazon link: Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 Pc). This was an excellent move. Not only does Norton not misbehave with its own advertisements (it even has an explicit setting to turn off "Special Offer Notification") and icon litter, but it has a much more-intuitive interface, it seems smarter in figuring out what the user needs without having to ask, and it even caught a trojan-infected file on its first scan that had been on my hard drive through 4 years of supposed McAfee protection. See my review for Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 Pc, and please consider your purchase carefully.

1McAfee is obtrusive and buggyNov 22, 2010
By Michael G. Lang "mlang46"
I have never been more frustrated with a piece of software in my life. It keeps saying that it can't update because I have a faulty internet connection: my internet connection is fine. Than I go to their website and download their trouble shooter and their trouble shooter crashes in Windows 7. In addition It is constantly reminding me of its presence. I am erasing this program which I paid good money for and downloading Microsoft Security Essentials which is free.

2Didn't catch spyware / virus. Charges almost $100 to fix itSep 19, 2010
By Fred S "Fred"
I use McAfee since I bought my desktop 5 years ago, but last week I got a virus (well, in fact, very malicious spyware). All kind of excuses from McAfee (blame the customer). I ended up with paying >90 USD to get a technician fix what McAfee didn't catch. Even if this spyware is very old and well documented and I get automatic updates from McAfee. The technician from India did a good job fixing it, but to pay almost 100 USD (incl tax) to fic a problem that McAfee didn't cath is outrageous. No more McAfee for me!!

4Good ExperienceNov 06, 2010
By Miz Ellen "all the letters of my real name"
Exactly one week ago, the primary drive on my home computer failed and I had to get a new one. This is the most stressful way to upgrade and as soon as I had the new computer up and connected to the internet, I needed to get it protected.

I've tried other programs, but for this new computer I wanted the best and I went back to the tried and true programs of McAfee. The first time I tried to run the CD something went wrong. That's when I found that McAfee no longer prints their toll-free number anywhere in the box. You've got to be able to get to their website before you can call them. That makes a certain amount of sense and more and more that has become the model for customer service, but having spent a week without internet access, I was rather sensitive on this point.

However, once I got to their website and called the number, getting through to a live person happened rapidly. The initial agent suggested that I click on some buttons and advised that she would transfer me to the technical desk. Her suggestions started the download and by the time the techie dude came on the line the program was well on its way to being installed. He waited patiently until I was sure the process was complete.

The people at McAfee gave 5 star service this time. I have to deduct a star because they didn't include clear instructions or a phone number with the CD in the box.

I'm running McAfee on a new Lenovo with a hard drive of 1TB. McAfee does use a chunk of capacity and on my old computer it significantly affected performance. However, I like the alerts as to if a website is safe or not and I like the constant updates.

3New version, new features, new problemsNov 05, 2010
By Matthew K. Morgan
McAfee Total Security is McAfee's top-of-the-line internet security suite, and for 2011 it has gotten a major facelift and several feature changes. Some of the changes are welcome improvements, while others disappoint. I confess that some of the changes I dislike for personal reasons, but others are more functional in nature.

The most appreciable difference from previous versions is the overall GUI (the control center, if you will). McAfee has completely overhauled the interface, switching to a single dialog box with collapsible sections and moving away from a more tab or menu driven approach. While the old interface did not bother me so much, the new interface disagrees with me quite a bit. I might appreciate it more if I could either maximize or resize the main dialog box, but because the dialog box is a fixed size - smaller than needed to contain an expanded tool section without bringing up a scroll bar - it is a little awkward. I think McAfee had the right idea in overhauling the GUI but the execution leaves something to be desired.

According to product documentation, the antivirus is supposedly several orders of magnitude faster than previous versions. In my testing, this has proved to be untrue. In fact, I noticed no appreciable speed difference at all. It is certainly not any slower, which is good. Though the antivirus has always been very slow in comparison to other products I have used, that has never been an issue because McAfee's antivirus seems to be lighter on resources that most other products so that the computer is still usable when the scan has been put in the background. System usability is almost always preferable to speed, unless scans are running overnight in which case speed does not matter at all.

The firewall is relatively unchanged from past versions, though the interface to it has changed as part of the GUI update. Every test I have thrown at this firewall has further proven that McAfee's firewall is capable of defending the system adequately.

The greatest improvement in the whole suite is the parental controls. Finally, McAfee has a working solution for web filtering, as part of their security suite! I was able to set up a profile for myself and set off to break the filters by searching for some less-than-family-oriented sites and then chasing them from the search results. Though I am sure there are sites out there that slip through the gauntlet, the ones I tried were filtered with no sneaky workaround. Interestingly, the reason for filtering was not specified on the filter page, so it is possible to run into the filters without knowing why access is being blocked to a given page.

One of the features I have enjoyed from past versions is Site Advisor, but this time around it is broken in a couple of ways. First, it does not work with the Opera browser, though McAfee makes it clear that it should work with MS Explorer or Firefox so one cannot get too upset. However, I noticed that it works intermittently when surfing with Firefox. I tried Google and Yahoo searches and noticed that sometimes it would work on Google but I never had it successfully work on Yahoo.

There is an anti-spam component but I am unable to fairly test it because my mailbox is filtered above me and spam never reaches my inbox. While this is a good thing, it makes using anti-spam software pointless in my case.

The help system is quite good and shows that a lot of effort was put into it.

The Total Security edition of McAfee's product line includes 2GB of online storage for critical files and data. I have never used this and at only 2GB it is likely that I never will, but for those that need to retain important documents and want to securely store them off-site then this is a good option.

McAfee Total Security 2011 is a decent product but it falls short of previous years' offerings. My observations with the product are that the interface is a little short-sighted with the fixed dialog size and the Site Advisor is broken, while the antivirus is still good (though not really all that much faster) and the firewall is still solid. I can recommend this product, but McAfee has done better in the past and there are better products out there right now.
