I ordered this letter opener in memory of the bayonet that I used to wear on my LBE. The letter opener that I received was generally well made, but did have a sizable lip on one edge of the blade. It tended to bluntly rip its way through envelopes. It was easily sharpened with a small flat file, and is sturdy enough to open packages. I knew that it did not come with a scabbard, but it would have completed the nostalgia of this type of specialty letter opener. The mortise slot is non-functional, but is designed to look like the original.
Pros: Solidly manufactured, easily sharpened and maintained, looks exactly like the M7 Bayonet, heavy duty enough to open packages (shipping tape) as well as envelopes. The dagger tip can easily open a variety of packaging, such as CD or DVD celophane. Surprisingly, although "Made in China" was on the packaging, the word China was not anywhere on the letter opener itself.
Cons: Arrived with a lip on the edge of the blade that made it harder to open envelopes. The muzzle ring can get in the way when opening envelopes with the longer edge of the blade. Using a draw sharpener may also remove the black finish from the blade. Using a small flat file will produce a sharp enough blade to easily open any envelope or package.
As I mentioned in the body of the review, I would have liked to see a scabbard supplied with the letter opener. Overall, I would readily recommend this letter opener to anyone interested in this type of nostalgic piece. Sharpened, it makes a handy little utility knife as well, just have a place to store it where the blade is shielded, perhaps a pencil/pen or scissors holder.
