2Subscription Service - Game stops after Level 2Oct 03, 2010
By The Management
Parents be advised that Jumpstart is a subscription service. After our little one reached the end of Level 2 we got a message that we needed to subscribe to Jumpstart.com ($75 a year) to continue with the game. This major detail is nowhere to be found on the packaging (apart from a curious 'First two adventures included' bit of small print, but that's it). This is false advertising as far as I am concerned. We bought the product on good faith and now they want another $75 from us. I am actually quite bitter about this.

While this would warrant a 1 star rating from me, my child absolutely loves the game and has a great deal of fun playing it when he comes home from kindergarten. So much so that we are debating going for the lifetime membership of $150 as I suspect he might want to continue playing until 3rd grade or so. Apparently additional grade level programs are free with the lifetime.

Honestly we're torn - we don't like the idea of rewarding a company after I spend $20 'buying' their product only to find out I need to pay more to keep using it, but the enjoyment and learning of our child is more important.

Regardless of what we eventually decide I wanted to let other parents know so they don't get burned as well and if they really want to use Jumpstart then save $20 and go directly to the website.

1Jump start is a scamOct 04, 2010
By Mom and engineer
I bought this for my 5 year old. It came no directions and had different CDs than what was shown on the box. I loaded disk 1 and it came apparent that all I bought for $20 (at Walmart) was a demo. The thing is worthless. I wasted $20 and walmart won't take it back.

2Buggy softwareSep 26, 2010
By Gadgester "No Time, No Money"
This 4-CD set contains 4 separate programs, and you must install and launch each program individually. Three of the programs require the corresponding CD be in the CD-ROM drive to run. The fun and educational factors of the programs vary, but overall the interface is confusing. Worst of all, the software is quite buggy, for example, in one Artist game the kid is supposed to click on some arrows or use the arrow keys to navigate a character, but there are no arrows on the screen and the character does not respond to arrow keys! Very frustrating to a young user. The software feels really crude.

5Love, Love, Love these games!Nov 28, 2010
By C. May
It is true that you are only able to play the first 2 games unless you subscribe to the jumpstart world service. I bought lifetime service for $60 during a promotion (they have them frequently) and I could not be happier. The jumpstart world CD is our favorite. I recommend copying the entire CD contents to your hard drive and then installing the software from that directory, rather than installing from the CD. This will make the game much faster, and you won't need to put the CD in the computer every time you want to play. This is an essential trick!

My daughter is almost 5, and it took her about 4 or 5 months to make it through all 12 Kindergarten levels in jumpstart world, and now we are starting on the 1st grade edition. She loves these games -- they have been very motivating and I am amazed how well they have held her interest. At times she plays the games for 3 hours at a stretch -- which might not be good, but it lets me get a lot of chores done while she is happily occupied AND learning. My daughter started Kindergarten a year early, and so far, she is at the top of her class even though she is the youngest. I regularly check her "progress" in the parent center, which I love. I think these games were a great jump start on her early learning (we also did the Hooked on Phonics series).

For me, this was money well spent. And I was able to download a preschool edition for free with my membership, and now my 2 1/2 year old is getting a jump start on her learning as well! You can have up to 6 kids on one membership. I think we have a lot more adventures to conquer in jumpstart world!! I stay away from the on-line version.

1Very disappointed!Dec 29, 2010
By Joshua Parsons
I bought this software for my 4 year old daughter, and before could even install it, I was REQUIRED (not asked) to give up personal information, such as my name, e-mail account and birth date (not my kids birth date, but the birthday of me, the parent). You are then asked for your address and Facebook account info. Why? Because after you install the game, they ask you to subscribe and pay more money. It turns out the game is just an entry point to a monthly subscription service. When I purchased the product at the store, I looked the box over and was under the impression that I purchased all of the games for my child to play, but this is not the case. Overall I feel slightly cheated and very disappointed!
