this company should go out of businessFeb 08, 2009
By Leah Snow I agree with B.Bronto. I would have given it no stars if I could have. This software purchase was a fiasco on every level. I could not get it to link to their website to validate the key to begin with so my newly installed software would not launch. I sent numerous email messages to them and got vapid replies answering just about every question but the one I'd asked. I finally started calling, waiting hours on hold, speaking to unintelligible people in various parts of the world and again, getting no help, just attitude. All of this took literally months to work through.
After more pain than I care to recall, I finally got it to work. It did a fair job of recovery in one segment of the program. It seems to have a lot of booby traps that lead to a waste of time and indecipherably recovered data, but I was determined to get my $40 worth so I kept banging my head against the vague user interface until I got some decent results. It recovered a "tree" with all the data arranged just like it is in windows explorer and my missing files were exactly where I expected to find them.
Then came the kicker. Although it didn't mention this little jewel of information on my box or anywhere in the cd manual, they are trying out a new way of running off customers. Subscriptions that have to be renewed after one year. The last guy I talked to inferred that it was the latest thing to switch all of their software, company wide, to this business killer. They'd better hope they make a lot of money on initial sucker sales because they will get no repeat business from anyone. You only get to burn me once.
Like B.Bronto said, I buy software to own it, not rent it. And, last time I checked, the "rental" price is about half of the initial cost! Who in their right mind would consider that a good deal for a piece of mediocre, user unfriendly software that comes with a surly and detached customer service staff who fills up emails with useless platitudes and no information. Not to mention the fact that this is a type of software that you might not even use once a year. I now backup my hard drive every night which further improves the odds.
The hassle factor alone would have made me pan this company, but the subscription rip off pushes the rating to laughable.
One final note. Since my "rental" period is not yet up, I decided to try it one more time to see if I could recover some files off of an SD card. I didn't get far because, once again, it can't seem to find the website to talk to and give my computer permission to launch. I already went several rounds in the ring with that problem and this time I am walking away. I am uninstalling now and tossing the box in the trash.

Useless. Do not buy.Aug 11, 2009
By N. deDios Does not work. Purchased this in hopes of recovering some music files I accidentally deleted. Program freezes up half-way through "scanning" process and never proceeds any farther.
I checked to see if any software updates were required to get it to work. Nope. Everything is up to date. Still doesn't work. Save your time and look elsewhere for a file recovery program.

If Only I Could Rate It Below 1 StarJan 13, 2009
By B. Bronto This product is a complete waste of money! I had a damaged disk drive, and a drive with a deleted but not overwritten partition. I bought this product hoping it could at least recover files on one of these. However, it froze while looking at the damaged disk, and was unable to find the deleted partition. Totally useless! Avoid this turd of a program. In fact, this program is so awful, I will be avoiding anything Iolo makes.
Also, on the side of the box, the fine print says "One year subscription. The subscription entitles you to use this product for the specified number of PCs during the subscription period." I read that to mean the product will suddenly stop working after one year unless I pony up more money. I pay for software to own it, not rent it. Had I known about that rip-off limitation previously, I would never have purchased the software. As it is, it doesn't matter because the product is going into the trash anyway.
My box had a little sticker on it that said "New Version 8", so don't assume if you find a version beyond 5 that it actually does anything.

Useless and WorthlessMar 07, 2010
By Murf I accidentally deleted photos from my hard drive and bought this software hoping to recover at least some of them. During the scanning process, it would lock up and no longer respond, and I would end up killing it through task manager. Never could get it to work and never recovered anything. Oh, by the way, the software license is good for only 1 year. Totally useless.

Do Not Waste Your Money!Apr 15, 2009
By H. Wms. This product does not live up to its claims. I purchased to recover a movie file. Could not recover any movie files. Was unable to review even most jpg files recovered. The proclaimed "advanced" recovery scan took minutes to run only for my screen to freeze up and go black each time. I will never purchase an iolo product again.
