2Good concept but has it's quirks.Jan 06, 2007
By Sam Gummy "bosho12"
Works well if you never need to remove to use your hitch very often. Water leaks into compartment, might rust over wet season. Extremely overpriced. Availability of replacement (and cost) of rubber cover unknown. When they tweak the design and lower the price to $29.99 it will sell like hotcakes.

4Hitchsafe good valueJan 10, 2007
By S. Davis
The hitchsafe quickly installed in the hitch, and the combination was quickly set. Keys fit in fine, but a credit card had to be bent a little to make it. After three weeks of driving through rain, the pins that fit into the receiver have started to rust. It works great for what I wanted - a secure place to put extra keys.

1Make sure your hitch's receiver hole is drilled close enough to the mouth of the receiver.Aug 11, 2009
By Jason Bader
As the tile states. The hole in which my pins install is too far back for this contraption to fit in. That was very annoying, the company needs to state (maybe they do and I did not read) how far the pin hole can sit from the opening. Make sure the (front of the) hole for the pins is less than 2&1/4" from the outside of the lip of your hitch opening, mine was about 2&1/2" which made this unit not fit. Any thing greater than 2&1/4 means it will not fit. The company should drill the back hole 3" and then also include a larger 1/2" spacer for these kinds of trucks. Sorry if there are typos, I am doing this review from my phone.

5Well madeNov 05, 2010

The Key Vault appears to be well made, with very little plastic. Being concerned about rust (which may or may not be a problem), I put a little bit of Teflon oil on the inside of the two sliding retainers that hold the two pins in, as well as a drop on the two latch points before installing. This way, if it does get some rust, it will have less of a chance of seizing up. Long term instead of oil, I'd probably recommend a small amount of Teflon based grease where the pin contacts the two sliders, as well as on where the sliders contact the inner wall. Since the drawer walls are high, the oil isn't going to come into contact with the contents. I'd probably consider a drop of oil on the spring in the back that pushes the drawer out when the right combination is entered and the lever pulled.

I easily changed the combination and had no problems whatsoever installing it. Time will tell if it gets water into the drawer, but so far, it looks decently water resistant. I personally am not worried about water getting in the drawer.

As for people being able to tell it is there, the only real way someone can find it is if they examine the hitch pins and notice that it isn't a standard hitch lock, or pull off the dust cover.

If someone had to place a spare key on a vehicle, this is the most secure solution for this answer. Of course, a thief who has some power tools can get into it, as well as someone sitting there flipping through 10,000 combinations.

If someone is worried that keeping a spare key in this would be a security issue, you can do the following which an acquaintance of mine does: Keep a "dummy" key in the Hitch Safe that will open the door. Then inside the vehicle, use a console or other strongbox with a stout lock store in there a spare key that works in the ignition. This way, for a thief to steal the vehicle, they would have to either break out the Hitch Safe, then try drilling out a heavy steel enclosure for the ignition key, or break the windows and try to get into the console safe. Either way, eventually a thief would prevail, but it will take a lot of time and noise. For all but the most crime-plagued areas, the Hitch Safe appears good enough -- it keeps all but the dedicated thieves with hand/power tools away.

5Great way to keep extras secureAug 12, 2010
By New Mac Guy "MP"
This thing is great. Make sure you read the directions before you install it. I have used it for both securing my key as well as other small things. I read one review about water seepage... well it doesn't claim water tight-water resistant is another thing. I have gotten car washed at drive thru washes, pressure washed myself and gone off-road in the rain and mud with nothing getting into it so take this for my 2 cents but I would get another without hesitation. A plus is the cap is very secure (tested it hard when I went off-road) rocks mud sand 3ft ruts. Great way to secure the key if you are going to park it somewhere for someone to pick it up for you (paid parking lots)
