4Awesome Improved SystemNov 19, 2010
By Joyful
The newer version of this boombox is truly great. The sound is amazing and the actual quality of the boombox is much higher than the previous boombox without iphone capability that had pieces falling off of it. The previous boombox has stickers that provide the illusion of equalizer lines and other things such as the titles for the ports and things of that nature. The quality was so poor that it came out of the box with the stickers falling off. This machine is exactly the opposite and overall great. The only con is that as with the original boombox from the 80's it doesn't have all the knobs and setting changes to play with the sound and things but overall, great machine.

4Not bad...an improvement over the older modelMay 09, 2012
By Drive-In-Freak
Sound quality:
So so. It sounds like a mediocre box from the '80s ( although better than most things that are available today)..not bad, but nothing to write home about. It does not hold up to the better boxes of the past, but that shouldn't be surprising. The treble frequencies are reproduced clearly with little or no harshness, the same for the midrange. Bass response seems to roll off at about 100-120Hz.
The good news is that it has separate bass and treble (-7 to +7 Db) controls, so your not limited to (often useless) pre-set eq settings.

Radio:
AM reception is improved over the older model (i931), though still not exactly great. It will pull medium level, and strong stations, but you can forget about anything weak or even slightly weak at all. Selectivity isn't that great either. I'd say it's less than average.
With an iPod in the dock of course it's much worse as they put of quite a bit of r.f.i. (static).
With that said it's still an improvement as the last model was practically deaf on AM.

The FM still overloads when close to a relatively strong station. It's not the most sensitive or selective, but it get's the job dome. Again less than average. It is capable of switching to mono, and that helps with fringe reception.

MP3:
The USB port reads your PMP/MP3 player like a disc (you can't use the controls on your player), and also charges the device (you may not want to do this if you are running "D" cells as it will drain them). The card slot works as it should and is HCSD (lager than 2GB) compatible.
Navigating is done by browsing though folders (F01 F02 ect.) and by clicking though ff (next) and rewind (back) just like a CD player. There is no menu or way to scroll through a list of files available. Holding down the FF or REW button will scroll though the file at a very slow 2x or maybe 3x normal speed making long files such as podcasts or audio books very difficult to navigate through. There is no resume feature, nor does it remember what track you were on should you change functions or turn it off..
Formats are limited to MP3, WMA, and WAV/PCM.

IMHO you're better off running your PMP/MP3 player though the AUX port

It does and ok job with an iPod. It can navigate though the iPod's menus, though now that the iPod's controls are out in the open (unlike the previous model) it's no longer necessary. My only complaint is that the controls are not exactly user friendly (though again, no longer an issue), but to be honest I find the user interface of an iPod to be less than great anyway.
The sound quality is just a touch better though the card reader and USB port. As odd as it may sound it seems the Lasonic has a better D to A converter. Go figure.

Now please don't get me wrong as I don't dislike it at all. It does have it's limitations, but for what it is it does it's job just fine. If something should happen to this one I'd gladly order another one.

I do however really wish they would make a model with a Sansa or some other dock for those of us who would rather not deal with the limitations of an iPod, but with the AUX in and (although limited) USB and SD port the issue is minimal.

If you want your batteries to last it's important that you flip the switch on the back from DC to AC as the remote sensor will drain them.
