5Fantastic UnitDec 14, 2011
By Rolfe Jones "Rolfe H"
Wow this unit is fantastic, especially for the price. Compact with a great sound and what is really nice is the DVD player which supports up to 1080p. It is easy to set up and to install and takes up so little room. In addition the FM radio is of outstanding quality even without adding the wire antenae included in with the package. Most other systems that I have had in the exact same location were always somewhat "fuzzy" at times.

One of the most powerful features is the amount of inputs and outputs which most small systems do not have.

It has the following inputs and outputs which is just fantastic.

*HDMI Out: x 1
*Component Video Out: x 1 (Y, Pb/Cb, Pr/Cr)
*S-Video Out: x 1
*Composite Video Out: x 1
*Analog Audio: In x 2 (RCA, Stereo Mini), Out x 1 (RCA)
*Digital Audio: Out x 1 (Coax)
*USB Port: x 1 (Master)

It should be noted that you are dealing with a Teac product which is just top quality and you get what you pay for. For $100 - $150 you get rubbish, for $299, you are getting an item of quality. The sound even with the speakers that the unit provides is very good especially with the sub-woofer unit.

The only items that I could think of that need improvement was a small issue regarding the length of the speaker wire for the small speakers, which need to be longer. Also upon putting in a CD disc or DVD in the receiver, the system takes about 30 secs to read the info and be ready for play. However if you can handle this small time delay the system is perfect! :-)

A final postive note is the item arrived very quickly, faster than the terms of the free shipping, even at the holiday time of the year!

I conducted a fairly exhaustive search before settling on this unit, so I will start with my reasons for picking this over everything else. First, there are very few compact units available. For this application, I really did not want a full-blown AV receiver due to the complexity of operation. This unit is simple to operate, and allows you to watch movies or play audio CD's. It is not as flexible as a full featured AV receiver, but unlike the more elaborate options, anyone can operate this thing, and even if you can't, it won't "stop" you from watching TV. I have found many of the big receivers to be unneccessarily complicated and "overkill" for their intended purpose, not to mention prohibitively expensive.

If you need to rattle the windows, this unit is NOT for you. While the power output is modest, the distortion level is low and it produces pretty clean sound. The manufacturer did you a favor by limiting the volume control so it is impossible to exceed safe power output levels. The speakers are small and tasteful, and the subwoofer provides the punch needed to balance out the sound. As a video player, it performs well; the only real downside that I can think of is the fact that it is not Blu Ray, but in my application, I was looking for a "workhorse" to use for playing audio CD's and regular DVD's,
thus saving my Blu Ray for those select applications. While the available inputs and outputs allow for some flexibility, the rear panel is a bit sparse if you are comparing it to most of it's big brothers.

To summarize, for a simple A/V application on a budget, this unit is a very good choice.

4Good value, but it's the wrong colorJul 20, 2011

This unit has pretty good sound for the size and price. I haven't used the DVD player, except to play CDs and it functions fine for that purpose. I mostly use it with my iphone for music. It's not a full blown ipod connection so you can't control the ipod menu with the receiver controls. The reciever has a USB port, but that's only for memory devices, not mp3 players or ipods.

The only real complaint I have is that I wanted the metallic finish depicted in the product photo. When I ordered there was no color selection so I assumed I would get something that looked like the phote, but what I got was black. I called the seller (J&R) and they told me black was the only color they had and they didn't know why the picture showed the metallic finish. I decided not to send it back since I like it well enough (and return shipping is a pain in the @$$).

Overall, a nice little unit with only a couple of drawbacks.

5Great system for the price!May 11, 2012

Perfect size, good sound, great price! You are going to enjoy the feature that it plays music from USB flash drive too!
The only thing is that the antenna that comes with it is basically useless, you need to get a new antenna if you want to listen to the radio. Also, before I bought it, I read some other reviews and one of them mention that the cable that comes with it is not long enough. To me, all cables are actually long, more than enough.
In general, I'm happy with my purchase!
