5Essential and Packable Emergency Kit ItemApr 01, 2010
By M. Ross "Bacchuskitty"
This is one of those things that your emergency kit - whether in your car, for camping, or backpacking - should not be without. It is lightweight but effective and packs down incredibly small, about the size of a 4 fluid ounce bottle. The bivvy sack comes in it's own small bag with a drawstring and there is still room inside to include additional small emergency supplies. It is so light and so inexpensive, there really isn't a good reason not to have one of these as an emergency backup shelter. It is especially good for dayhikes, where you don't want to pack a lot; there is ALWAYS a possibility of a dayhike going wrong when you hike far and are remote (getting lost or injured) and if you absolutely have to spend the night when you didn't expect to, you'll be glad you tossed this little guy in the pack.

While the material is reasonably strong, it can still be torn by shoes, keys, and other sharp objects, greatly reducing its effectiveness as a survival shelter. This is something that you have to climb into and there is only room for one, so take that into account if you are seeking to provide emergency shelter provisions for more than one. I personally feel this is superior to other emergency blankets as it is basically a tube rather than a sheet, and the material seems more durable than others I have looked at.

5Works Great!!!!Jul 15, 2011

I can't praise the Adventure Medical Kits Sol Emergency Bivvy, enough. It's small, lightweight, and works great. I used it one night on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia during a Thunderstorm. It got down to the 30's as well. I won't say I was comfortable and warm in it (It's made to keep you alive only), But I made it through the night, completely dry too!, also there wasn't any condensation build up in side it either. Great Product.

4Probably good for emergencys.. but not in the heatNov 08, 2009

Will disintegrate if stored in the heat.. I've tried a few of these as they work great for back packing lite.. but they just don't last very long in the Arizona heat.

4Good for some warmth, gets sweatyFeb 05, 2011

If you have no space for anything larger, this is a good emergency bivvy.

I had to sleep in the office one night, and decided to test this bivvy.
It was about 65 degrees in the room, and it felt about 75 degrees inside the bag.
The bag is waterproof and wind proof, but is complete non-breathable.
After a few hours, it got quite damp and condensation formed, but I was warm.
My back was still cold since body heat conducted directly though the bivvy and into the floor. It seems like it needs a little distance from your body to work its magic.

In theory, these reflectors can cut the temp difference between your outer layer and the ambient in half. Air inside the bivvy is cooled from direct contact with the material, so the real temp difference will be less than that.

The material feels strong, but anything sharp can cut it. After using it, I rolled it back along the creases and it fit back in the tiny sack just fine.

In an emergency situation in the outdoors, you will probably be cold and damp, but you'll still be warmer than w/o it. I will carry this around on outings, but only if I can't pack anything larger.

Adventure Medical does have another bivvy at twice the weight (8oz) that I want to try, and may be a better alternative if you have the space.

5better than I expected.May 20, 2011

I bought a few of these to try out and was pleasantly surprised. It is not as crinkly and noisy as most mylar emergency blankets. It will not replace a wool blanket by any stretch but it is small and enough to toss in any bag. I will definitely have a few of these in my emergency/survival kit.
