5Heavy, and solid.Oct 25, 2010
By The Tall
Over the years I have made many attempts at learning how to throw and stick a knife in a target. It started with a $100 three piece set purchase. They were small, maybe five inches over all and light. I lost one, and then broke one in half, and in the meantime could hardly ever stick them. I ended up giving the other away. Years later I bought another set that look and felt much like the $100, but only cost $15. Same problem, I could hardly ever stick them. Then I bought these. First thing I noticed, they have some heft to them. They are tough, well balanced, and heavy. The 12 inch length allows them to fit in you hand comfortably. At first I had the same problem, could hardly ever stick them. But then I move up to 10 feet away, and guess what, I started getting the knives to stick. The weight is a plus, the knife's mass allows it to hit hard without having to throw hard. Pretty soon I was hitting the target and sticking them 90% of the time. I did break one in half, but in fairness, I was throwing at 25 feet and it hit at a weird angle. Over all I am happy with these and will be buying another set.

4A good beginner's throwing knifeJun 11, 2011
By Hawksbill
For the record, I've only been throwing knives for about 2 weeks. I had picked up a cheap set of 2 knives about 15 years ago, tried to throw them, failed and put them in a closet. Recently, I got back into it and built myself a big wooden target in the backyard and have figured out some degree of accuracy. But, I got tired of throwing and retrieving only 2 small knives so I ordered 2 sets of these Gil Hibben 12" knives so I would have 6 more. I especially wanted something larger than the 6" knives I'd been using.

These knives are definitely bigger. They are 12" long and about 3/4 of a pound. When you hit the target they provide a very satisfying "thunk". They are well built and sturdy and easier to throw than my old, smaller pair. And in fact, after throwing these for a while and then trying my old set again, my skill had noticeably improved. After about 5 days of throwing they remain in pretty good condition. There have been a couple of nicks to the blades here and there, but these were easily remedied with a small metal file.

The only complaints I have about these knives are:

1. The sides of the blades were a bit sharper than I would have liked. The first time I threw them by holding the blade I cut my fingers. I have fixed this by filing down the edge of the blades, but it was a bit of a hassle to have to do that. Makers of throwing knives should know that we don't need to be able to cut through a steak with the edge of the blade. The point is the point, so to speak.

2. They are a bit bigger and heavier than I really like. I think if I could get a similar knife but about 10" long it may be perfect. There is a set just like this only 8" long, but that may be a bit too small for my tastes. While I'm throwing with my right hand, I like to hold the other knives in the set in my left so I can quickly "reload". The combined weight of 5 of these knives in my left hand is just a little awkward. Not a big deal, but a personal preference.

3. The sheath that comes with these knives is very nice, and appears to be made of sturdy leather, but it only holds two of the three knives. I guess if you're holding one knife and have the other two sheathed it makes sense, but as it is you're not able to hold all three knives in each set in the same sheath at the same time.

These are relatively minor quibbles, though. All in all I'm very happy with these knives and they have definitely helped me improve my skill in throwing. Despite my minor complaints, I would happily recommend this set to anyone.

5Great throwing knivesJan 08, 2011
By Nate
These knives are great for longer distance throws. There length is good for judging rotation and there weight helps them penetrate targets at distance. I was able to get five inches of penetration at thirty plus feet and split several other in two. These knives greatly increase a throwers ability when compared to other smaller, lighter and differently shaped knives. With practice being able to stick these knives into a target quickly becomes second to accuracy and then to distance. I have been able to regularly hit targets at over thirty feet. I have owned and used many throwing knives, but before these I would not of believed that possible.

5pretty coolApr 16, 2012

Haved used these on two occasions so far and have found them to be great fun. We took them to our campsite on the river and had a good time with friends throwing these into a dead tree. Turned into a nice competition between husbands and wives. The knives were thrown quite a few times on each night we had them out. Several times they bounced off and hit the ground with no damage other than some very minor scratching. They were shipped quickly and arrived with a leather sheath that holds all three knives. They do take a bit of practice to get the point to stick each time (although the hilt will also stick if you over or under rotate your throw).

5good knivesMar 08, 2012
By M. Wells "Matt Wells"
These knives are big and a bit heavy, they throw great, the tips are strong and have not bent or broken and are still sharp after extreme use. I put these knives through ridiculous treatment practically everyday it wasn't raining for an entire summer (throwing as hard as I can and from great distances, landing in gravel/rocks and throwing into hard wood and hillsides) and other than a few nicks they are still in great condition. The sheath is ugly and cheap but it's sturdy enough and does its job. I'd recommend these to anyone, I think these things will last forever.
