3You get what you pay for.Apr 13, 2011
By Nawin Waree
Looking to do video capture on the cheap, with some trepidation I ordered Roxio's Game Capture device. At about a third of the Hauppauge HD PVR's price, it seemed a bargain for the person who didn't want to bother with the more complex intricacies of capturing video, and who didn't exactly want or need HD video capture.

The Roxio does a fair job of meeting those expectations. The device takes a component input of up to a resolution of 1080i, and captures at a YouTube-acceptable resolution of 480p. Hooking the console of choice to the Game Capture device, and then hooking the device to the TV and laptop/computer, is very simple. The software is a no-frills, straightforward affair - just hit "Start Capture" and you're going. You can capture in AVI, WMV, and DivX formats, with tradeoffs between file size and processing power required.

However, the Roxio Game Capture is not for everyone. There is a serious degradation in the video quality that appears on your TV when it goes through the Game Capture device, darkening and softening the image not unlike a cheap splitter. For those who pride themselves in owning HD consoles for HD-quality graphics, this won't be acceptable.

Also, make sure that the computer you plan to hook up well exceeds the specifications outlined by Roxio; an AMD 2.0ghz Dual-Core is definitely not enough unless you enjoy having your audio/video de-sync (or worse).

Roxio's customer service has a hard time leaving the script when it comes to troubleshooting, and is not very timely in replying. However, they do provide discussion forums where you can post issues that you have.

All-in-all, a satisfactory device for those who don't care too much about capture/output quality and looking for a cheaper alternative for video capture. However, for those who won't be satisfied with the lackluster video quality and Roxio's (lack of) customer service, it is advised that they look elsewhere.

5Fantastic value, amazing value!Apr 04, 2011

I purchased this product with the hope to produce 480p videos of me playing Rock Band 3 on my xbox 360. I received the product, opened it up, and I had it hooked up very quickly. I had a brief problem hooking it up through component input 1 on my HDTV, but it worked fine on component input 2 for whatever stupid reason. I used Roxio's very helpful wiring diagram on their website to ensure that everything was hooked up correctly.

Once I had it hooked up, I installed the software on my computer, rebooted my computer, and I was ready to record. I launched the software, which was insanely simple to use, and I recorded my first Rock Band 3 video. I recorded a short 5-minute video, uploaded it to youtube, and I was watching my video in 480p in less than 15 minutes. Most of the time was spent uploading and waiting for youtube to process the video. It was amazingly slick, simple, and easy to use.

Feel free to view this sample video to view the video quality: [...]

It's worth noting that it does come with a component cable, which is very nice considering many retail stores would be happy to sell you one for $30! Bear in mind you will also need a system-specific component cable, which I bought at Gamespot for $15. They actually sell one cable that is compatible for PS3 and XBOX 360, which is pretty convenient!

The software is decent, but it definitely has its limitations. For example, I don't think it's possible to superimpose one video clip on to another video clip. It's very popular to superimpose a cut-out of the note chart along with a video of you actually playing. I don't think that is possible with this software, though I'd be happy to be corrected on this. Most commonly used transitions and effects are available, and you can dub your own audio narration over the video, which is great.

Conclusion: This is an excellent product and a great value. This is great for anyone that wants a simple solution for recording 480p video from their consoles, and then uploading it to sites like youtube. I look forward to an HD variant in the future!

Bought this to have some fun capturing game play on the XBOX 360. The first step is to install the software on your computer. I installed the disk and it looked like everything was working so I attempted to capture some gaming. as soon as it started to "capture' a error code popped up and the system closed down.
I tried contacting Roxio about the issue after several attempts to get it to work. Roxio's customer service was worse that you would get if you were calling your local DMV. No help at all. Calling them directly was a joke also, believe it or not no one answered the phone at all during the 6 business hours I tried calling them. Got a rep from Roxio on instant messenger and after typing out my issues and waiting for 10 minutes for a reply, I get a generic install guide e-mailed over to me. nothing about solving my problems with their product. second attempt at IM ends up with a 10 minute wait for another generic reply with same install guide which covers what gets plugged into what..

I spent some time online seeing what others have found when setting this thing up and tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. every time I re installed the software it actually got worse and did less. by the time I uninstalled and reinstalled it for the 7th time it refused to show even the least bit of life. its like it was fighting me to work. FAILURE..

I really hate being defeated by inanimate objects, but this thing drove me nuts. and with no help from the manufacture it was a nightmare that I spent about 7 hours on, attempting to get to work. It is a utter and complete failure.

The only thing that is working out for me is Amazons return policy is spot on and I will be returning it to them asap. I am glad that I bought it from Amazon and not a partner seller as who knows what issues I would have had attempting to return it...

5WORTH IT.Jan 21, 2012

The roxio is an excellent capture card. Note, it doesn't record in HD but it does allow you to play in HD while you capture. But you can always export in HD with the built in Video Editor to boost the quality some bit. The Roxio comes packaged with sufficent cords to hook up to an HD TV. Once you run the software they show you an instructional video on how to set it up. I don't have an HD TV, so the instructional video was pointless. But after playing around with the wires I got it too work on my standard definiton televsion. If this is your case (Having a standard defintion TV) than you need patience when setting up. It took me a good 35 minutes of wire combinations before I finally found the right combination of plugs for my TV. Once you find out how to set it up for your TV, Your golden. THE ROXIO DOES WORK ON STANDARD DEFINITONS TVS. The audio is nice and crisp. Perfect sound for me. Note, if your capture is lagging it may be a few things. Your computer isnt rockin' enough, and it can't keep up with the intense frames of say, Call Of Duty. I have a Windows Vista (The worst of all windows computers) and I'm doing fine. So that's good. It can capture in 3 formats. AVI-WMV-DIVX, Avi looks the best but takes up space really quickly and agressively. WMV doesn't take up as much space but the quality is so-so. DIVX is my personal favorite, the quality is great and the compact size makes it take up less space. Make sure before you start capturing you create a folder, (ex. ROXIOVIDS) and have the clips set to save in there, or else they will be everywhere. Note, everything I'm saying is from my experience with my XBOX360. I've not tried the PS3 but assume it all works the same.

Love this product works great but the reason I gave 4 stars was do to the audio lag because of it I have had to do commentary instead which is fine. Also another great thing is when I bought this I didnt realize you needed windows 7 but I found an easy way to use it without windows 7 and if you need any help finding out how go to twall218@YouTube.com and find my roxio setup. Great item,
