3Comparison of the 3 SS sippy cupsDec 31, 2009
By Irena
I own all 3 stainless sippy cups - the Kleen Kanteen, the Thermos Foogoo, and the Safe Sippy. Conclusion: each has its specific use that it is best for. I use the Kleen Kanteen for water, the Foogoo for milk (so my daughter knows what drink she is getting). I like Safe Sippy the least.

My daughter is 17 months and has been using a sippy cup since 5 months.

Kleen Kanteen - 5 stars- my go-to cup and favorite of the three

Pros:
* Easy to assemble and clean (I wash it every day with hot soapy water and a nipple brush to avoid anything growing in the spout)
* Takes the Avent spouts
* Does NOT leak either from the valve or the threads (note to people who say that it just lets water run out - make sure you put the clear valve on the inside!). Also does not leak when she drops it or shakes it.
* You can put a can koozie around it if you need insulation!!!
* Lifelong purchase - When they don't need a sippy anymore, switch out the top.

Cons:
* The black plastic collar that screws in place has broken 4 (Yes! FOUR!) times when my daughter has dropped it. Costs at least $4.50 to replace. Has broken each time on a linoleum floor!
* My daughter has dented the bottom by banging it on the concrete outside. (not really a big deal, just aesthetically not as nice anymore)
* Mine did not come with a lid.

Thermos Foogoo - 3 stars - daily use for milk - great for outings but started leaking after 4 months

Pros:
* The thermos construction keeps milk cold for hours!
* My daughter has dropped this one (or thrown it) and it does not break and only leaks a little milk from the spout (none from the threads).

Cons: Complicated!!! Read the directions!!!
* Valve is 2 pieces, difficult to remove, and don't loose either piece!
* Lid is 2 pieces, can be difficult to align.
* Lid pieces must be aligned perfectly and must be screwed in perfectly (spout exactly 90 degrees from the handles) so that it does not leak from the threads.
* My daughter has dented it.

Other comments:
* When my daughter was younger I liked the smaller volume - a larger size would have been too heavy and my daughter did not drink more than 7 oz of milk at once. Now she drinks more, and a larger cup would be nice. I guess now I just need to take a regular thermos of milk, and a separate sippy cup.
* It did not leak from the spout or threads for many months, as long as it was properly assembled, even if it was stored sideways. However, after 4 months of use, it now leaks a bit. If I put it in my bag, I put the cup in a Ziploc first.

Safe Sippy - 3 stars - Leaky so I use as a backup cup for water - I like the straw that comes with it (would have rated it 2 stars if there was no straw)

Pros:
* Handle is removable (Its kind of cheap and gets in the way, might be useful for the youngest kids)
* Switch out the inside valve with a straw! This is cool - I taught my daughter how to use the straw, so when she is older we will use this cup more.
* Rubber around the outside, so no need for a koozie.

Cons: Leaky! Leaky! Leaky!
* I wonder if the valve on this thing is just inconsistent between each bottle. Mine leaks when it is upside down and my daughter stops drinking and the pressure equalizes. It also leaks if its upside down and gets shaken at all. Some folks complain that it is too hard to get any water out, and others say it is perfect.
* The threads do not leak
* The o-ring is hard to get in and out to clean and you must be careful not to break it in the process.

4Tried many sippys... This is the FIRST that does not leak!!Oct 20, 2007
By Anonymous
Seems other reviewers (on the foogo without handles) has said this sippy cup leaks. My very active toddler twin boys have been man-handling these cups for the past 2 days without a single leak at all! I am very impressed! Love the hearty construction and rugged look. Too bad for my hardwood floors, however! Oh well, I guess with time, they'll learn to throw them gently :)

Anyway - we have been using the Born Free sippys for the past 4 months and really do like them. However the lids keep cracking and they leak just like all other sippys, plus they sweat terribly. The foogos do not sweat at all, which is another bonus.

Most importantly here - we are super glad for the safe plastic & metal construction (and will continue to use the Born Free as well).

My ONLY complaint with these cups is that

1) They are only 7 ounces and my guys drain these things rapidly. Seven ounces is not enough to get us by on ANY excursion.

2) I don't know if it's easy to come by replacement parts, but the valve parts look like they will damage or get lost very easily.

3) Wish they made a sport spout for when they grow out of the sippy phase. These cups are an investment $$ and appear they will last a long time. So it would be nice if the cup would grow with them rather than have to ditch it in a year. (plus I'd like to have one with a sport top for me as well!)

Anyway - that's why the 4 instead of 5 stars. But I definitely recommend them.

Oh, it is kind of a soft spout which is nice... I should mention, they will seep some water if your kids push down on the spout (like mine) to make the water come out on purpose. Otherwise when they are just laying around on my couch, carpet and hardwoods, they absolutley do not leak a drop!!

We also tried the foogo straw cup. Nice, but they do leak when turned sideways... my boys aren't old enough for them yet. Maybe next year. Again, too bad the lids are not interchangeable, wish Thermos had thought this through. (And, Thermos,if you're listening... PLEASE MAKE A 10/12 ouncer!)

1very destructible lidJan 12, 2008
By Molly Franklin
This sippy cup is great idea and great design. Unfortunately, if your toddler chews on the spout very much at all (and what toddler doesn't have the urge to chew on something nice and soft in her mouth?), you will soon have a hole and eventually the entire top of the spout will be in two pieces. And there are apparently no replacement parts. Bummer. Otherwise, it's fabulous, but with a broken spout, pretty unusable.

2Cup leaked, returned it, second cup leaked - enough!Jan 11, 2008
By avidresearcher "avidresearcher"
This cup LEAKS. The first one I tried leaked like crazy, so I returned it. The name of this item is "Leak-Proof Sippy Cup", so I figured that if mine leaked, it must be a mistake. Wrong. The second cup leaked just as badly.

It will not leak if you always keep it right side up, do not tilt it, do not bang it and do not slosh it. But if you turn the cup upside down, or even tilt it, it drips briskly from both the spout itself, and the little air hole opposite the spout. So if you give it to your child, it will leak milk everywhere (and isn't that why you buy an insulated cup, to put milk in?) Leaking water is not the end of the world, it'll dry eventually, but leaking milk is not goode.

It will also leak milk all over the inside of your diaper bag. If the spout or the little air hole comes into contact with cloth or anything absorbent, milk will wick right out of the cup, soaking your bag, your clean diapers, your stuffed animals or your extra set of kid clothes.

Otherwise, it's a terrific cup; safer than plastic, doesn't hurt your eyes design-wise, and keeps milk nice and cold. It is quite heavy. You do not want your kid throwing this at another kid, or even dropping it on their own foot. Ouch. But I can live with that, all sippy cups are heavy when they're full. I can't live with the leaking.

Why on earth can Gerber and everyone else in the business make a $2 sippy cup that doesn't leak no matter what you do to it, yet Thermos can't pull it off with this $15 item? It's very frustrating.

1Excellent for drip-watering plantsFeb 27, 2010
By Maddic "David"
The nice steady drip makes it an excellent replacement for an Aqua Globe. Keeps my plants watered while on vacation, and I don't have to worry about washing all 5 pieces and bending my thumbnail pushing it back together any more.
