Great novelty item, but has some flawsFeb 22, 2010
By Ravenwood This is a great novelty phone that works well and looks fantastic. But there are some flaws and design characteristics that detract from the phone.
First, the handle is plastic and feels very cheap. Wood or even a solid heavyweight plastic would have given it some heft and made it feel more authentic.
Also, the ringer is a modern, electronic sounding tone. Oh, you can crank the handle and hear the real ring, but when someone calls it sounds like one of those cheap 1980s electronic rings. The only adjustments are for ring volume, so we are kinda stuck with it. Even my cell phone has an old timey ring, so I don't understand why they couldn't put one on this phone.
If you have vision problems, this isn't the phone for you. The numbers on the buttons are a dark brown font on a black background and very difficult to read. Sure its just 0 through 9, but you have to strain to see the numbers from any distance. And forget it in low light.
Overall the phone looks great, but as soon as you handle it, the old timey charm dissipates. The frame is die-cast, but there is a lot of cheap feeling plastic used as well. the entire neck and platform above the dial are plastic, as well as the handle itself. I would have like to see more durable materials used.
The coiled handset cord is a nice cloth that has a modular jack at one end, but not the other. So if the cord frays, you can use any modern handset with the base. However there is no way to disconnect the cord from the handset, so I guess that is just trash (or a jerry-rigged repair). Time will tell how long it lasts, but for the money I wonder if we should have picked up an authentic antique phone instead.

Penny Wise and Pound FoolishMay 12, 2011
By Sharon Davis I fell in love with this phone online. And, was excited when it finally arrived. At first glance I was enchanted. But with further scrutiny was disappointed to find that the manufacturer had decided to skimp a few pennies on the production line, to take what would have been a superlative product and downgrade it to CRAP. While the phone is mostly constructed of quality materials - they decided to use a plastic housing above the dial which completely destroyed the whole effect. I really don't get the reasoning behind this. Further, the ring/belltone is not authentic.
What a disappointment! I can't help but think that using metal for the housing couldn't have cost much more - but would have made this product look infinitely better, because the plastic used for the housing was not a high grade material. Hence the title, "penny wise and pound foolish".
If you don't care that they used cheap shoddy materials on the exterior housing and that the belltone is not accurate - then you will quite possibly be happy with this phone. But if your looking for a quality product and not just a novelty - I would pass.

Cool looking phone with some kinksDec 31, 2010
By VintageLover What you see is what you get. The phone is, aesthetically, exactly what I expected. However, when I first used the phone there was a strange static sound coming from both ends. That sound seems to have gone away. The only other con is that the ring is very modern sounding, which I found disappointing. Besides that, this product serves its purpose: to be a novelty gift.
eiffel tower reproductionJan 17, 2012
By scott I love this phone, it's uniqueness is unsurpassed. I have mine on my oak roll top desk and it is a wonderful addition to the room. not something you see all the time and was so very glad I chose it.

live the acient yearsFeb 25, 2011
By Rosario Álmea This product is so perfect for my living. I'm so... so happy, cause I can remember the 19th century and I think I live there. The tower is bilding with metal and plastic and I love it.
