For experienced scanner users the PSR-800 is certainly radical. There's no keypad, but rather a set of buttons reminiscent of an MP3 music player. For scanner novices or even experienced users who will be traveling and don't wish to program the scanner for every city they're visiting, the PSR-800 is a great option. The radio is about the exact size of a deck of playing cards although an inch taller. It's very convenient size is perfect for scanning on-the-go. It will conveniently fit in your pocket which its direct competitor, the Uniden HomePatrol, is far bulkier. The PSR-800 is pre-programmed with the RadioReference national database for the U.S. and Canada. To program the radio you press a Menu key, select Browse Library and you then follow a hierarchical tree structure for selecting state, county, municipality and agency. You can select at one level, such as county, and the radio will program everything within the county; or, you can drill down to the public works in a particular town and just select that department for scanning. Each group of channels is then assigned to a Scanlist and you select which Scanlists you want to scan. The audio on the PSR-800 is very good and as usual with GRE the APCO-25 digital audio decoding is excellent. With its backlighting on the PSR-800 display is very bright and easy to read and the unique multi-colored LED which can be matched to specific groups or channels, has been expandedl. The top-mounted control is for squelch only while volume is handled on the rocker panel on the radio's front face. With service searches, Spectrum Sweeper and a number of other functions the radio the PSR-800 is a trend-setter. | | | Features: | |

greatest radio ever!!!Jun 16, 2011
By Eric B. Robins, M.D.
"co-author "Your Hands Can Heal You"
I have been listening to police scanners for the past 35 years. What a pleasure this scanner is. The things I like about it include: 1) fairly compact size 2) nice solid build 3) easy to operate, even for a non-techie like myself 4) great sound quality 5) I love the fact that it charges via mini-USB port 6) has a great readout on the screen which can be edited either manually or via the computer interface 7) I live in the Los Angeles area and its great to be able to pick up LAPD on their digital APCO 25 system 8) very nice sensitivity 9) all of the frequencies and trunking systems are built in. Previous radios that I owned were very difficult to program (including my most recent Uniden 246t).
Areas for improvement: 1) a bit heavy on the battery use, I'd estimate I get 8-10 hours use out of some fully charged batteries (just ordered the Sanyo Eneloop 2000 maH batteries with separate charger) 2) the stock antenna is okay, I switched over to a Watson W-889 which works noticeably better for most of the communications that I listen to ranging from 460-860 mhz

What A Great ScannerMay 09, 2011
By Kevin Hersha This scanner is solidly built and couldn't be easier to program with the included software. With the attached belt clip you don't need an optional carrying case
This is my first handheld scanner and GRE scanner. Compared to Uniden base/mobile scanners the sound is tinny and background noise is much louder. If it were not for this I would have given a 5 star rating.
Am looking forward to a GRE base/mobile unit with the same advanced technology and ease of use. I'm guessing the larger speaker will take care of my sound complaints.
UPDATE: I mostly listen to an analog, simulcast, 800MHZ trunked system. I went to a 800MHZ antenna and audio has greatly improved.

LCD Screen Scratches Way Too EasilyMay 08, 2011
By MPrecious3 Great scanner but the LCD screen scratches way too easily. That's not good. Even just wiping it with a soft cloth will scratch it up badly. I use now a quality microfiber optic cloth to keep the scanner clean of fingerprints, smudges, and it doesn't scratch the LCD screen. I'm still looking around for some kind of screen protector for it, and a carrying case, too. Those are a must have.
I wish the LCD were made of Gorilla Glass. I would pay more for that instead.

If you need to monitor TDMA, you need thisAug 24, 2011
By Mike I didn't want to buy this scanner because it was ugly and lacks a keypad (number pad). But, since I work in a county that has a new TDMA radio system, I started hearing less and less traffic. I finally broke down and bought it and I'm glad I did. My first reaction was "this thing is UGLY!". After I got over that, I had it running and listening to the sheriff's office in about 2mins after putting batteries in it. The software takes a little to get used to but works very well. The recording feature is awesome!! It will take up to 32GB micro SDHC cards, but it is picky about brands. SanDisk and Transcend reportedly work well in it. Be aware that the larger the microSD card installed, the longer the scanner takes to boot/load. It take about 30 seconds with a 32GB card.

Even a novice could use thisNov 01, 2011
By Rich P I've been messing with scanners for decades, dating back to the crystal controlled ones. Some were easier to set up, some were complicated and cumbersome. I gotta' say that being able to program the scanner through the computer is just so slick. It takes a little to get used to some of the terms used in this scanner. But they make the overall programming so easy because they provide all the frequencies in the database. You just have to go through and point and click. Want only frequencies for state agencies, easy enough. State, county and local? No problem. Duplicate frequencies with various departments? it flags them for you to review.
