I have been editing for several years and with different machines. I can tell you that not all consumer based products will work in all PCs. The problem is each software you load effects the other. I have had programs that work great until I install another program even years later and poof the editing software no longer works or it starts locking up. Roxie screwed up my machine and I am having trouble burning DVDs. I downloaded the trial version from the Ulead web site and it was the only one that worked. My advice to anyone is to go to the manufactures web site and download the trial version first. I use Magix 11 to edit but the DVD burning feature does not work in the US. Ulead 3 and version 5 worked until Roxie was installed on my machine. Now only 6 will work. I have wasted many hours of my life coming up with various workarounds for numerous editing and authoring programs throughout the years because all of these products tweak the drivers and they don't always play nice with each other. Of coures you could call support and watch the finger pointing begin. ALWAYS USE THE TRIAL VERSION WHEN POSSABLE!

P.S FYI Corel recently purchased Ulead so don't hang them, this program has been out for many years.

I've been using MovieFactory 3. It could import .mov from my Kodak digital camera and .mpeg from my Sony HandyCam. But I liked the 16:9 preference setting that MF6 had, which is how I record off my HandyCam, and the DVD menu was setup for 16:9 better in MF6. So I placed my order and installed. Then I try to import .mov into a project. It will play half of them but it doesn't track the time properly. The rest play just a few frames. These were all taken the same day with the same camera. What a disapointment. I then tried installing the patches and they did not fix the problem at all. I can't belive my MF version 3 is better than MF6. What a waste.

5Great DVD makerNov 15, 2009

Great for putting pictures and videos together to make a DVD. Easy to use.

3Good software, but limitedAug 11, 2009

I purchased MovieFactory to create a DVD presentation composed of about 500 pictures that I took on a recent 16 day trip to China. While this software has some real possibilities, I found the following to be opportunities lost:

1) When building text slides to insert among my pictures, there was no way to establish a preset base for the background, and font style (typeface, size, color) to be carried through the project. Font settings were also not saved for text that was added to a picture.

2)There was no way to view larger images and navigate through each picture in the slide-show. It was necessary to open a separate window for each slide in order to see the slide in a larger format. Once the larger window was open, I would like to have seen a tool to simply move to the next picture.

3) Transitions were applied to every picture in the slide-show. There was no way to select a specific transition for each slide.

4) None of that application windows were scalable. While some of the windows could be made full screen, the primary window provided no scalability at all.

After composing my DVD, I then encountered an error when trying to BURN it (to either a DVD or creating an .ISO disk image). I had created my project with 16 "slide-shows" (one for each day). Tech support suggested that I export these slide shows into Video format files, then import these video files into a new project. This addressed the issue. They were not able to explain why the error occurred, but the solution causes a lot more effort. My project (as slides) was 3.40GB (13853KB on disk). The Video version was only 2.26GB (1304KB on disk). I can only guess that they were not managing my 4GB of memory very well.

Finally, after creating my DVD, I found that the item selections on the Menus were not being identified (highlighted or otherwise). These worked fine using Media Player on the computer, but they only worked on 1 of 5 DVD players that I tried. (not very good odds). Tech support said this was a deficiency of the the DVD players...not the software, since it worked on the computer.

What did I like?

1) Reasonable number of available Menu layouts were available...and tailorable.

2) You could import groups of pictures from multiple directories, and the group would acquire the name associated with the directory.

3) When dealing with directories, MovieFactory remembered where you had been.

4) Picture viewing time can be distributed equally among the pictures in a slide-show by adding 1 or more music tracks, and using the length of the music to determine how long the slide-show will last.

5) Tech support was responsive, courteous, and helpful.

5This software is a blast!Jun 09, 2009

MovieFactory 6 is a wonderfully easy and intuitive app to use. So far I've only had to refer to the manual for two questions...one on optimization (two-pass rendering) and one on combining video files into one "movie". I was able to figure everything else out with their mouse-hover help balloons.

DVD authoring with this tool is a simple 4-step process: import your video files, edit them, set up your menus, and then export your project to a DVD, dvd files or an ISO file. You can preview your resulting ISO file in VLC Media Player before burning.

There are some nice transitional effects included but the coolest features involve the dynamic menus that preview your movies right on the menu. You can add your own background or music and you can even edit the music. You can really make some nice-looking, professional DVDs with this tool.

I'm running WinXP 32-bit. The install was very invasive but it went fine. I used CCleaner to rid my PC of some new startup items. I've had no technical issues whatsoever so far with the software. Unless you have some specific, high-end need, I highly recommend this software.
