I wanted an open coil unit for quick heat up and cool down, but have gone back to the solid metal tops for safty reasons. I have had three fires in only two months of use. Because of limitid counter space a chopping block was set on, what was thought to be an off burner. The block caught fire because of the on off style heat controls. They turn on and off by thermastat, not reostat. It is impossible to simmer with these controlls. The unit has a light to tell you its plugged in,(dumb), I would rather know if the burner is on. The knobs are possioned in such way, that if you set a cookie sheet on the burner to allow the cookies to cool, you can turn the burner on, and because of no light, you won't know...I"ve done it. I know I'm an idiot, so I just want to help others from being like me.
