1Was A Surprisingly Great Upconverting Player For Seven DaysFeb 03, 2010
By Joseph I. Dubin
Last week we got a 32 inch LCD for our secondary HT system and wanted to replace our 480p player with an upconverting unit ASAP. Knew Coby was a non-brand name with a reputation for manufacturing inexpensive equipment mostly confined to discount outlets but purchased it knowing it could be returned if unhappy.

Well, had to return it. It's now developed audio-synch problems. Such a shame for at such an inexpensive price it seemed to be a steal, however, just proves how right those old adages are: "you get what you pay for" and "if something appears too good to be true, then it probably isn't".

Will admit, after proper tweaking I was floored by it's totally unexpected and outstanding picture quality. The picture was sharp with rich detail and color without being over-enhanced. It also had advanced features not found on many, more expensive models including a variable dynamic range and storage memory to resume multiple discs (something not pointed out in the owner's operating manual).

But what good are all those features if the unit begins to break down in less than a week?

It's really for the best this happened for I would have always been apprehensive about it breaking down too quickly.

4Great Upconverting DVD Player For The $$$$Oct 09, 2009
By R. Cunningham "Bobby C."
Great little up converting DVD player for the money...easy to hook up and play, had it playing in minutes,
self explanatory remote control so very simple to use and to enjoy the features

-The only complaints were it didn't supply the HDMI cable with it...Easily fixed, ordered for $15 from Amazon and Skakawack the 6'cable was delivered extremely fast and worked great...(Highly Recommended Seller)

-The other problem was the remote control has to be aimed directly at the player for it to work properly which I fixed by angling the player toward my easy chair

- Also thought it was just a region 1 dvd player but you can change to region 0 in the set-up menu for all Countries

All in all for the price well worth the money...the complaints I had are easily fixed and I am well pleased

(I stand corrected I guess items don't come with HMDI cables)

1Works great..........for a month!Feb 08, 2010
By OB
I bought two of these units, one for myself, and one for my mother. At first, we were both pleasantly surprised with the picture quality and general ease of use. What a great machine, and for such an affordable price! How sad we were when, a month from the date of purchase, my mom's dvd player just started skipping back to the beginning of the movie no matter what disc she put in, and, a mere week later, my own just stopped functioning altogether. Two units, and both in the garbage can. What a shame. Oh well, I guess you pay for what you get.

Don't waste your money on this piece of junk.

The DVD player started skipping all of my DVDs. At first I thought it was the DVDs but it wasn't.

1Absolute Junk...and worse Customer ServiceFeb 29, 2012

I'll start off by saying that I didn't buy this at Amazon...I got it at Fry's electronics. I got this for my dad because his beloved Philips 642 died so I thought why not try this one. Has NTSC/PAL playback. He has an old small grey Coby that still goes strong but lacks a few features. So I thought why not give this one a go. Geez I made a mistake.

Within the 90 day return period this thing started pixelating bad. My dad called and said there was something wrong so I went to go see for myself and before I got to see what he saw, he mentioned that it now started to make a "popping" sound once in a while. So I sat down and watched a dvd and right off the video started hesitating and pixelating. I first thought it was the dvd he had so I put in another one and..the same. I kept going through the pixelating and all of a sudden a "popping" noise". It was a like a little gnome inside the dvd players case took a hammer and hit the inside of the case. It only does it once then it doesn't do it again until you turn it off and watch another dvd.

I tried calling Coby and couldn't get anyone to talk to. I emailed Coby and never got a response back. So basically the 90 day warranty was smoke and mirrors.

Do yourself a favor and buy another brand. These guys don't honor warranties or put out quality products. Hardly any "cheap" dvd players anymore last very long but you can bet a Philips or Panasonic or Toshiba will last longer than a Coby.
